So it is January 19 and was 60+ degrees in Kansas, so I went out and fished for a bit at a local 2 acre pond that had been frozen over until a few days ago. Caught a small little bass, but it gave me 12 straight months with at least one bass. It was also my first bass on fluorocarbon. I was using some 8# P-Line 100% Fluoro on my ML Spinning Combo and about 6 casts after my bass I have a mess with a loop that had formed on the spool. Like I said, I am new to fluorocarbon lines, what can I do to help from having this problem happen again?

 

I am 100% sure I am to blame on this one.

I like using KVD Line and Lure conditioner, whether it works or what. But I notice improvement in line management and memory when I use it.

Pull off about 1/2 of the flurocarbon and put on a superline with 6# mono equivelent diameter. Then add a 4' leader of that fluorocarbon.

Flurocarbon is bad enough on spinning gear but in cold weather, it is more unruley.

KVD LINE AND LURE. The stuff flat out works. It will help manage fluoro, your line will be a bit limper, lay of the spool better, and get a little better casting distance. It should take care of the line twist too. Ive never used p line fluoro but i do know that not all fluoros are good on spinning reels. I sayy all this assuming that you spooled the reel properly.

You may want to consider upgrading your fluorocarbon line too.  I believe Seaguar Invisz X is the limpest line on the market.  Add KVD line conditioner as you are spooling it on and you will have the most manageable line there is.  My drop shot rod is always rigged with 100% of this stuff.  My birds nests have all but disappeared.

 

Another thing to consider is braid with a FC leader.  10# PowerPro with 8# FC leader.  Any FC will work in this case.

This is a tough time of year to try to start fishing fluoro. Not that it doesn't work in cold weather but it gets stiffer and tends to jump off a spinning reel a little bit. Lighter line will help prevent this and the L and L conditioner helps also. A light lure that offers little resistance in colder weather with fluoro on a spinning reel is almost a guarantee to get at least a little bit of a mess.
