Coaching Of The Youth

What a dumb comment and has nothing to do with the original question but rather than make this political and break forum rules I will let it go.I hate that everyone gets a trophy. Bottom line is some people are better than you and you will never be the best every night. I am all about winning and have even thrown away trophies for 2nd or 3rd place in hoop it up tournaments. I am by no means a bad sport but to reward kids for trying is silly. Their reward is getting to play on the team and learn from players better than you are. I was an education director at a boys and girls club for about 8 years and we would all play basketball and other sports. I never let a kid win and you know what, they tried harder and when they would beat me in a game of PIG or HORSE it actually meant something to them because they earned it. Not everyone is athletic just like not everyone is book smart and not everyone can build a house. Everyone has talents and the only way to know is to try and fail and move on. And while on the topic, what is with parents letting their kids quit mid season because they don't like it or aren't having fun. Total crap to me. You start a season you finish unless your grades aren't good.

It wasnt a political comment, but, admittedly was very broad spectrum.

The people that give trophies to winners and losers also want to take your guns, not allow you to use lead when fishing, and in maine dont want you to use plastic and rubber lures. While every liberal is not the same, this is certainly not being conservative.

What's wrong with giving a kid a trophy. It doesn't change the fact he or she just lost. You think that the little chunk of pot metal is going to change the fact that the kid isn't going to work harder. People don't want the little trophy they want the 4 foot tall trophy that glistens in the sun and plays mp3's. I think we are being a little ridiculous by assuming that giving someone a congrats you lost memento, or a you suck less than you did plaque is destroying the competitive edge. We aren't talking about high school here we are talking little league.

Sorry don't buy that giving a kid a lousy trophy is going to change their drive. That comes from the parents not the little trophy.

Put it this way, you work at your job and you get paid. Regardless if you are the best employee or not you get paid. The bad ones get fired everyone else gets paid, the really good ones get bonuses. The idea that we wouldn't give a kid a trophy in little league for their effort is the same as saying you didn't bring in the most contracts we aren't paying you.

Good perspective. I could see more of having specific awards for each kid. Maybe best hitter, best fielder, best thrower, best slider etc....might be a better approach than just saying you participated here's a trophy.

Child development experts, at least when I took the course(s), said, if I recall, that the critical learning  first 10 years of life, will affect their intellictual and emotional development for the rest of their lives. Kids need to know there are winners and losers in every aspect of life. We are not all the same. We are not all equal. This equality crap has been going on for a long time. My son played football with the park district from about 5th grade til high school. Because he was bigger than all the other kids, he was allowed only to be an offensive lineman, because his size was an unfair advantage. When my ol' ladies son played baseball, first year wasT Ball and then next  year coaches pitch, and following year everybody pitches because it's fair(and we all know the coaches son is always the pitcher after that LOL) The ol' ladies daughter quit soccer because they didn't keep score. If there were no winners then why bother?

Go out there and kickass and take names. Teach your boy the same.

The small participation trophies I see no problem with. We used to get those back in the 80s when I was my sons age. My beef is with the older 10 and up age groups that dont keep score because someone might get their feelings hurt. I see nothing wrong with getting participation trophies. Some of the bridge belts the Brother Ironworkers have, bare a small plaque from the job it was given to them on. Its basically a participation trophy from that job.

Around here they do t ball then coach then machine pitch. To me let the kids pitch. Yeah some are going to get hit but its not like a 7 year old can throw 40mph heaters yet.

Also while I am on a slight rant, all aluminum bats should be banned from all levels of baseball. I know wood costs more but it just isn't the same to hear the clang of aluminum as opposed to the crack of a wood bat.

Problem is some people are happy with the small trophy. That thought process will hold one back for the rest of their lives. The lack of a trophy may teach humility, With any luck the kids would learn from it.

Raider: I agree eventually you have to pony up. At a point in life there are winners and losers keep score.

Slonezp: again I feel this isn't the kid but their upbringing teaching them mediocre is acceptable. I personally believe, from my experiences, the here you go trophy made me work harder but that may be because of my personal work ethic.

Also we will always have people who strive for mediocre regardless of trophies.
