What Type Of Anchor For A 14/36 Jon Boat?

Featured Replies

We are heading to pick up our new 14/36 jon boat tomorrow for fishing out of. I'm new to boating of any kind and was wondering which type/weight anchor do I need?

I have heard get two, why not just get ONE that weighs more? Probably a really dumb question but I want to get the right thing

One out the front and one out the back.  Without 2 the slightest wind will have you spinning around the single anchor.  10 lb mushroom anchors will hold you unless you are in a swift running river.

Welcome to the wonderful world of boating.  With a 14' jon boat you're starting small.  That is a good size to learn on.  The first rule of boating is that a boat is a hole in the water that you pour money into.  Now you get to learn all the rest of the rules on your own time, at your own pace.

Fishesintrees,

We just got the boat to fish out of on lakes and the such for 2 people. This is the only size we need for just 2 people aboard, I actually thought it was pretty spacey for what it is, personal opinion.. Also got this for the low maintenance and portability.

Tnriverluver,

Makes complete sense now, thanks.

Nah, it isnt all that bad, just keep up your preventative maintenence and be meticulous.

X2 on using two anchors, especially on a small boat. Congrats and Good luck with it, i hope you catch alot of fish in it.

Is there really much maintenance to be had on an aluminum jon? The trolling motor we will be using will just be kept indoors. Thanks for the kind words, can't wait till it gets warm out.

No certainly not. I have a 14 footer (double wide) that is use for ponds and the roanoke river, i do not have a gasoline motor for it, just a trolling motor and there is really zero maintenence. Its like a big canoe. The only maintenence is the trailer (bearings) and keeping my battery charged,(it is on a tender in my shop)

Now my bass boat is another story, not a headache, but you do need to stay on top of things. There are more systems and moving parts.

That's what I thought. I would love a nice big bass boat for the family but right now we just cannot afford it. But hey, fishing is fishing and we'll be able to get out there where the fish are and enjoy doing it with this. The 14/36 for us looked to be plenty spacious- might make some modifications to it not sure yet on that

You can keep it cheap but the itch never stops once it has been scratched.  First a small outboard, then a little bigger newer outboard, then a cheap sonar but it doesn't work well so a much better sonar, comfortable seats, more tackle and more tackle is never enough tackle, a thousand here, a thousand there, then a bigger, nicer, faster boat, LOL   You will soon get the picture.  B.O.A.T!!!!!!!

It depends on how you fish. The only time i use my anchor is when i pause to eat. (sometimes) I find they are more hassle than they are worth. But, i don't fish moving water either..

I use 2 anchors that I made from 2' sections of pvc pipe with rebar through the end. Filled em with concrete and they hold great!

I cat fish from a 16 1/2 tracker and wouldn't think of using one anchor. In swift current, one anchor will have you swaying like crazy.
