i use poppers all the time but i feel like my pole is to big i use a ''7''berkley casting rod with a black max with 30 pound slick power pro is that to much or should i use a smaller pole or what thanks alot can any one help please hahah

I use a 6' Medium G2.  It really makes working the bait a lot easier

I use a 6'6, Medium, fast tip rod with 15-20 mono for poppers and light topwater.

The length of the rod you choose is personal preference. I recommend 6 1/2'-7' Medium Power/

Moderate Action. Braided line is not the best choice for this application. Try a #12 monofilament

or copolymer (Yo-Zuri Hybrid).

7'+ rod that loads a bit into the blank (fast/ moderate fast) with braid and leader. Spinning or casting depending on weight/ size of the bait, Straight braid leads to too many foul-ups for me.

 

Despite what I've heard about the lengths of rod, I do just fine with longer rods. In fact, I own only one sub 7' rod, and that's my ultralight.

Load that joker up with some braid and go catch some fish and post pictures. 

I use a 7'2" medium moderate action rod with straight braid. I used to use mono only but found with the braid you can make smaller movements with lure becuase of the zero stretch. Never had an issue with the braid but you do have to keep you drag a little looser.

My preference is a 6'6"Med. It needs to be on the short side. A shorter handle is a plus too.

I like to use as light of mono as i can get away with which is 10. (Last fall it was 8) i also use this rod for a jerkbait rod. Lighter line is good for casting distance, espeacially on those reallyy light poppers.

I like a much shorter rod for poppers and walking baits, because with a 6'6" rod or longer, I am smacking the tip into side of the boat way too often.  You can break off tips that way.  This I KNOW.

 

Currently my dedicated popper/walking bait rig is a 5'9" Mitchell Fulcrum, straight out the late 80's or early 90's, I can't remember.  I would call it a medium action (all the print on the side has long since worn off).  

 

I got it on a close out - it was one of the first split grip rods I had ever seen.

For those light topwater baits that don't cast well I use a 6' ML BPS Crankin' Stick with a 50e.  It's spooled with 20 pound braid and I tie on a chunk of mono, maybe 10 pound, for a leader.  That leader is to keep the hooks from fouling all the time.  It works well for lighter treble hooked baits in general.  Shad raps, flicker shads, tiny torpedoes, etc.

A shorter rod would allow you to work the bait easier.  And if your not using a moderate action rod i would suggest a line that stretches, such as mono, flouro, or co-polymer.
