How good are Weedless Spoons?

Featured Replies

Does anyone still use these? Any tips or suggestions on fishing these?

Airborne, my friends and I usually do not use spoons but when we do we use Silver Buddies with a trailer.

One of my friends likes to throw them and he does OK.

The rest of us don't throw them opting for a weedless trick worm or Texas rigged plastic in the grass or a treble hook bait along the grass line.

So give 'em a try and let us in on your results.  ;)

Johnson Gold Spoon with a trailer is a killer over vegetation  ;)

They are still quite effective. I use them with a trailer as a change of pace bait. ;)

Amen!

The home of the J-spoon is surface vegetation, where other lures fear to tread.

The J-spoon has never been more effective for me, probably because it's not a top-shelf lure.

Roland Martin's lifetime best stringer was taken on a 1/2 oz black Johnson spoon & trailer.

It was back in the day of the 10-fish limit, and weighed in at 87 lbs! (Santee Cooper).

My favorite size is the 3/4 oz spoon, which stabilizes a large grub trailer

and bulges a slightly better deeper track through the salad bowl (overcasting is the only drawback).

It's slowly becoming my go to topwater over vegatation.   I had a lot of luck with these last year.

I'm a big fan of the Moss Boss, in black and white especially:

It's my lily pad search lure, along with buzzing toads. Then when I find some fish, I slow down and toss frogs.

I used to throw the Johnson spoons with a small, curlytail pork frog for pike and bass, whatever wanted to bite. They are very good and often overlooked lures.  I might have to get some more, the pike snatched all of mine.

They are overlooked and can be VERY effective at times.
