Polishing Gears In A Reel

Featured Replies

So I'm bored and I want to tear apart an old baitcaster I have and polish all the gears and other brass pieces in it, I plan on using a Dremel tool with a cotton buff, what can I use to polish them? I was thinking some sort of a pumice paste, My wife is a dentist and has this paste she uses. Bad Idea? Good Idea? and suggestions?

Whatever you do (I have never done it nor looked into it), use a soft polisher. Using something very abrasive like pumice could take off a good portion of metal which would result in a very shiny, loose gear in your reel.

Just clean the teeth with a degreaser and a toothbrush.  Make sure the drag surface is clean and the drag washer isn't to worn.

Dremel sells a polishing kit containing an ultra-fine polishing compound. That's what I use for internal reel polishing.

If you're talking about polishing the teeth of the gears, I've done two gears sets so far, with mixed results. Both were Daiwa Fuego baitcasters. The first turned out to be a much smoother reel on the retrieve. The second showed no such improvement. I don't know, at this time, if I will ever do another.

Polishing the gear teeth is a time consuming process. I went through a lot of felt wheel and nylon brushes. The gear teeth just chewed "em up.

Polishing the metal components of the drag stack is a much better thing to do.

If you have an old, lower end reel, you may not see much improvement, except for the drag, which will benefit from a good polishing.

NO GRIT PLEASE.

x2 There's really nothing to be gained there.

X3  Polishing is just what idol hands love... :eyebrows:

If you want to polish something, forget brasso. Use Flitz. I have some gun parts I've polished to a mirror-like finish with Flitz. Best stuff around hands down. That being said...I don't think it will help much in a reel but what the heck...I polish stuff that doesn't help any just for the heck of it.
