Hey Guys, This year I want to participate as a non boater in some bass tournaments. First of all I would like to know is how you approach these tournaments as to strategy and also what you do to scout the lakes the tournament is going to be held on. Also any tips on using baits and tackle tips as to how many rods you should have and or what you might need to compete that would be great. Any help is appreciated.

Definitely talk to your boater to see what he plans to fish. Not lures but water depth, structure or cover. Stock your tackle primarily for that stuff.

Also have in your toolbox some things for other conditions based on any research you find online or through map study.

Always have one versatile go to finesse technique and power technique that you can always rely on. For me that is the spinnerbaits (1/2 oz) and the finesse worm on a shaky head. Those are tied on no matter what!

Lastly I carry only 5 rods with me. 3 bait casters and 2 spinning. 2 with my go to techniques and the other 3 to cover everything else in my tackle box.

Some tournaments you draw your boater right at the ramp, this can make things tough. In these cases I would say scout out what the lake offers, ie vegetation, wood, rocks, etc, and set up some rigs to attack these situations. You have to be prepared to fish fast, and slow, especially if you don't draw until the morning of. I agree with Felix77, 5 rods is plenty, some guys don't mind 6, others only take 4. I would set up a couple horizontal presentations and a couple vertical presentations, all with lures I have confidence in. Then you just adjust and go from there.
