I just received my Sustain fg 3000 in the mail today,and i just want to know if i should direct connect the braid without backing or go ahead and use mono backing/tape?

It all depends whether you want a full spool of braid or not, performance wise I don't think it makes a difference.  I always, and always means 100% of the time, put a layer of tape on my spool before loading it up, whether it's a conventional reel or spinning, mono or braid.

There are a lot who tape and spool, I never do. I don't like the fact that if you want to remove the tape you have a sticky mess to clean off that requires smelly solvents, I always use mono, 5 or six wraps then braid if I have enough, this way next year or when I have worn the braid enough it is limper than I like I can turn the braid around and have fresh line for my next year maybe 2, I some times get 3 or 4 years life out of one spool up by doing this it just depends on use, If I have enough line for the purpose but not enough for a full spool, then I use mono backing to make up a full spool. The choice is just a matter of preference, like snook said, performance wise both work the same on the business end!

Personally, since I doubt I'll ever be spooled (and I'm talking Stradic 1000), I always use filler line, usually 10 lb mono.

 

I prefer not to stack the entire reel with braid simply because I want enough (buying 300 yard spools) for a couple more reels. Stuff gets expensive and I try to "stretch" the spool across as many reels as I can.

If i buy a 150yd spool of braid, i can get two reels spooled, just back the reel with some leftover mono and put 75 yards of braid on each reel...

I go braid all the way.  Where I fish I deal with rocks, coral, pylons, seawalls caked with barnacles, fish with razor sharp gill plates, excessive line twist due to specific lure types. I'm constantly cutting off damaged line and some of my species are very capable of spooling past the braid and into the backing. I'm fishing this gear pretty much 7 days a week, it just doesn't last me that long.  I like having a full spool of healthy braid on, it's worth the expense to me.

I don't like the tape method, though it works. Whether you want use a lot of backing or not is personal preference.  For shallow spools, I prefer no backing, and simply tie on 10' or so of old mono to the filler spool of braid, and spool up.  For deeper spools, I use more mono backing.  I've even used old braid - whatever takes up space that I won't be using.
