Cabela's locally has an awesome clearance going on. Would you buy a 6' MF one piece rod or a two pice MHF 6'6" or 7'? My friend is just getting into bass fishing and this will be his first real rod purchase.

I say if it's his first then it doesn't matter.  If they get really into it they will spend enough on rods in the long run.  If I had to choose I would pick the 2 piece 6'6".  Not because it's 2 pieces but because it's in between the 6 and the 7 foot.

 

I started off with a very similar 2 piece.  6'6" Abu Garcia MH spinning.

I started two piece many moons ago, it was easy to transport. If transport is not an issue, i would lean toward a one piece. There's nothing like casting a two piece during a critical cast and the top piece flies off.

Either way if he starts catching fish he will be happy, but he may be less frustrated with a 2 piece b/c he can break it down and stow it away relatively easy.  On the other hand like previously said it can be frustrating when the end goes flying off into the water or a tree.  As far as size I can't stand a 6' rod.  The only way I would want a 6' rod is if I was having to make casts in tight areas all the time (i.e. creek or river).  I would say go with the 6'6" or 7. 

6'6" definitely. Probably the most comfortable all around rod to fish imo. I am 5'11" and average build so unless he is on the smaller or larger side i would split the difference and opt for the 6'6".

Me as well but for some reason on dog walkers I'm constantly pushing the top section down into the bottom section after a period of time from casting and dog walking. I never lost a section but my son did...he was 6 then and was fishing the new rod that Santa got him for the first time...poor kid was devastated.

I would say that after many years of fishing, I like a split rod for pond hopping and a 1 pc for the boat.

Yeah, I could see that for dog walking...there would be some flex at the part where they joined. I retract my mild skepticism! And that would suck for a kid to have happen.

 

At any rate, that's how I go as well: split for shore fishing, one piece for the boat.

I like my 6'6'' 2 piece.  I have a small car and its just a lot easier to fit the 2 piece rod in the trunk.  I've never had a problem with the top piece coming off but I'm also pretty diligent about checking the part where it connects (as well as any other removable parts like the reel handle) every so often to make sure nothings loose.

my uncle told me to always go with a 1 piece. he taught me to fish and that is the first thing he ever told me when we went out to get my first rod. i will always remember it. i dont remember the reasoning, but i do remember him saying that. I have a 6' spinning rod and i have had no issues with it. I would probably go 1 piece, but just cause its what my uncle taught me early on

I've rode my bike down roads that are 45 mph with a 6'6" rod in my hand and tackle box in the other to a small lake. I've also fit 8ft muskie rods in a 4 door car from the passenger seat to the back window. Go 1 piece, you can always find a way to move it around.
