Extra Large Baits

Featured Replies

OK, I am from Wisconsin, but moved to South Carolina. As a result, I have musky gear that I haven't used in a while. I was wondering if anyone uses extra large baits with any success. I have everything from cranks, topwaters, plastics, etc. Under what conditions would these be a good choice? I know I will get some funny looks from others on the water when I whip out this gear, but I don't care if it will produce. Thanks for your input!

While fishing for muskies in Minnesota, using large baits, the big shallow diving shadrap for example, or my super large jitterbug, and BAM, BAM, BAM!  I caught bass EVERY time I fished for Musky.......BIG BAIT, BIG FISH...a rule-of-thumb to live by.  Fish on.  John.

I would be willing to bet that a vast majority of the fish in your area have not seen any type of musky baits or larger baits in general.

I can't tell you when to use them, but all the time seems good to me.   ;)

In cold water I throw big inline and bucktail spinners up here for bass. On some lakes in the warmer weather, big 6" striper poppers work well.

Have you heard of the swimbait craze for big bass? Becoming more and more popular for targeting the largest members of any sport fish species.

I have a musky rig as well and use it these days for tossing Huddlestons, BBZ-1's and Slammers. Just started this year however, so my results are less than stellar thus far. But I have high hopes! ;)

As crestliner said perfectly... get some big swimbaits and ur all set ;)

Big baits work in SC. What area are you in? I may be able to suggest a few lakes they work real well in. I took a musky fisherman from Wisconsin fishing a few years ago on a lake here in GA. Probably one of the best swimbait fisherman I ever fished with. He taught me some musky tricks that have put a few big ones in the boat for me.

I had good luck last year with the giant Xrap jointed in bleeding olive flash. Caught more than a few Northerns but also some real nice bass as well.

Thanks guys, I am near lake Wylie in SC by the way. I'm gonna get out there and start chucking the big hardware and see what happens!
