Spinshot Vs. G-Finesse Drop Shot Hooks & Making Your Own?

Featured Replies

Anybody prefer one of these kinds of hooks over the other? I got some spinshots to try this year and would try the Gamakatsu hooks but they're a bit expensive for my taste.

I'm actually thinking about making my own hooks of this type. It's not that hard to bend a little stainless wire.

Spinshots work for me, they are a quality product. I like Gamakatsu just fine, but I am not paying a premium for them, especially when VMC is coming out with great stuff, at a modest price point. I have never been disappointed by a VMC product. I wish I could say the same about Gamakatsu (flipping hooks, weedless wide gap finesse, etc.... to name a few) Proof that a higher price tag isn't always a better product.

I got 3 packs of the G-finesse hooks from our Christmas exchange and like them so far.  When the time comes to buy more, I might look at the VMC for price vs. functionality.

I use the g finesse hooks cause it saves time attaching your leader compared to the vmc's where you have to tie two knots. But, they are expensive....

x2 ... I prefer the spin shot too. Price and quality. I foundt them on sale @ Walmart for a $1. Took em all!

I used the spin shot last year and really liked them. Can't seeing paying more for another brand and I use mostly gami hooks.

The problem with VMC hooks is that they aren't consistently sharp and are never as sharp as Gamakatsu. I consider VMC to be a decent hook company whereas Gamakatsu is a premium hook company in my opinion. The only Gama hook that I was disappointed  with is their flipping hook because the keeper won't stay in place.

My current favorite drop shot hook is the Gamakatsu Wicked Wacky hooks, with the little tube glued on to the shaft of the hook.  You thread your line through that little tube and it guarantees that your hook stays correctly aligned.   They come in sizes 1/0 to 5/0 so they are kind of more suited to a bubba shot approach.  I generally fish them on 20 lb abrazax.

For regular drop shot fishing (6 or 8 lb fluorocarbon) I have a bunch of different styles & brands.   I haven't settled on any one that I like more than any other.  The spin shot hooks seem like a novel idea, but I don't like the idea of tying two knots.  This upcoming season will see more experimenting.
