Which Popper has the best " Bloop" sound ?

Featured Replies

I fish poppers like the Yellow Magic that are great for a spittin' & walikin' type of presentations. However I was fishing a couple of years ago with an older cousin and he did well with a popper that made a constant " Bloop" sound as he worked his bait slowly, I believe he had used an old Pop R. I only have one Pop R but it doesn't consistently make this sound, only after a second pop without a pause. Is there a difference between the older Pop R's & the newer ones ? Is there another brand or model that does this better? Thanks

it may just be how you are fishing the lure. the amount of slack in the line and the action of your rod affect how the popper is fished.

on that note, I have had more success with a faster retrieve so that the popper makes a spitting sound, rather than the slow "bloops" you are speaking of.

In my experience a pop with a slack line is better at making a popper spit while popping with a tighter line with a downward movement of the rod will make it bloop.  Vary up the spitting and blooping for best results.

This is what you need to do if you want to  make that "bloop" sound consistently no matter what brand you use.

9 times out of 10 I prefer that faster retrieve as I tend to fish most baits as fast as I can get away with and I can get that sound intermittently as part of the retrieve. However on the rare occasion that I want to fish it slow, that is 1 pop and then a pause I can't seem to get that sound out of the poppers that I'm using.

get yourself an arbogast hula popper for a great popping action, if you like topwater bites throw and jitterbug once in a while as well.  my pop r works great for me but my brothers hula popper seems to be louder

From the time I've started using them, the Pop-R has produced for me so I haven't really ever used much else.  I think as the others have said, it's more a matter of how you retrieve it than brand.  I can make a Pop-R make that blooping sound pretty easily.

The advice given on "how" to make it bloop better is spot on.However if your looking for a different brand that excels in blooping or chugging then look at which ones have a deeper more concave cup on the front. For example the zell pop or the rico have a flat face with a lip on top. This causes the sound to be more subtle and makes them spit better. The rebel pop-r is right in between. You sort of get the best of both worlds. You can make it do everything.

That said some good bloopers for me are Heddon Poppin Image(my favorite),Heddon Lucky 13,Hula Popper,River2Sea Bubble Popper.

Years ago they made some wood Pop Rs could be one of those. Wood poppers make that bloop you are asking about. There were also some made out of a heavy plastic. Could that have been Tenite?

I agree. I successfully use both these baits regularly.

Bluestreak I think you might have touched on to what I was looking for, I consider myself quite proficient with poppers and topwaters in general but there was a difference between his popper and mine, I caught a lot that night as well with my Yellow Magic popper with a quicker more skittering retrieve but nevertheless was impressed with the plug he was using. I will have to look into that, I appreciate everyone's replies so far.

Yup.  This is the first bait that came to mind when I read the title of this thread.  The Secret Weapon pattern is pretty cool.

Can't remember which of the Bass Pros on Vs a year or so ago gave your answer.

MORE BLOOP = your knot tied in the middle or top of the eye.

Less bloop more spit = knot at the bottom of the eye.

a drop of super glue helps keep the knot in place.

Man I've always loved the Hula Popper. Is it not as highly thought of these days because it isn't new, or has something else come along and surpassed it?

Wow, this many posts and not yet (unless I missed it) a mention of the rapala skitter pop's bloop. Its plastic cup mouth makes for a very unique bloop. This and the hula popper and homemade poppers are my favorite.

Gotta love the bloop! ;D

What he said.

hula poppers make the the biggest bloop(sometimes, too big).but i like the skitter pop the best

very interesting thread because i fish my poppers to avoid making the bloop-bloop sound. i catch fish when i make the popper spit and splash but have never caught one blooping it. very interesting.

loudest bloop is definately the large size hula popper. It will wake up the neighbors.

That can also be influenced by rod angle.
