Hi guys,

I've got different rods that require balancing but I'd not want to drill, cut, remove the butt end to add screw on weights. I was thinking of wrapping the butt with lead wire or tape and covering it with tape. I was also thinking of getting shrink wraps end caps and putting brass or lead in it before shrink wrapping it to the butt. I know that BPS has something that goes on the end but I'm trying to keep the profile to a minimum and they are a one size fits all.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I buy rubber folding chair tips and insert quarters and put it over the butt of the rod.  Cheap, simple, and looks attractive.

I use the same rubber chair tips, but use the lead weights from a couple of old BPS Rod Balancers that have come off of some off my older rods.

 

I've got it to where I can balance my rod and reel set ups with one finger. It really does cut down on hand and wrist fatigue.

Here a pic of one of my rods they also protect the end from damage thats the reason I bought mine. My Croix Elite got gouged and didnt want it getting worse.

 

Depending on how "off balance" it is, I just wrapped electrical tape on the back of the handle in front of the handle end. It balanced mine pretty well and I don't notice the tape while fishing. It's not fancy, but cheap and easy, although I use relatively expensive tape.

Electrical tape is sticky and the glue will leak out. I think splicing tape would be a better choice. It is also rubbery and will have more of a non slip surface. 

 

Where should the rod balance? I always thought it was right in front of the handle.

I bet you're right about using splicing tape. We'll see how the electrical tape holds up as it gets warmer out. I may just have to go pick up some splicing tape.

Splicing tape is heavier too, if I'm thinking of the same stuff you are.

I kinda like a heavy bass at the other end. That balances things out perfectly.

I really like the BPS rod balancers I use them on almost all of my rods that are for tip up presentations, like flipplin and pitchin jigs t-rigs, casting hollow body frogs, stuff like that. they really do make a rod much more comfortable to use and also because of the ability to relax your forearm muscles it allows the rod to feel much more sensative than before.

The Abu Vendetta rod that I bought had small round holes in the foam on the butt cap. So I just took some round split shots and stuck them in the holes. They fit perfectly and now my rod is much better balanced.
