I may be wrong but for stained water I use chartruese. Not full but mixed in with other colors like purple or blue. And for clear I try to go as natural as possible. Bluegill, sunfish, and shad patterns.

firetiger he caught a lot while i caught none

Firetiger is really good around and over grass and there are lots of firetiger baits available.  Why try to reinvent the wheel? 

I fish both the lower and upper Potomac and can tell you a LC 1.5 in Copper Perch is the best all around crank. So far it has produced in every body of water in this state under any water clarity conditions. The only thing with it is the catfish in Mattawoman Creek like it.

were you using the same retrieve?

for stained water I use firetiger (around grass) or black and red

for clear-stained I go with shad or ghost type colors

also, look at the profile of the bait, you could both be using the same color, but the action of the bait probably has more relevance than the color does.

ding ding. sure color can matter but the above, imo, matters more so than others

instead of worrying about the color, I would focus on making a better retrieve, and casting to better locations.  those 2 things will far outweigh the color you tie on.  if he outfished you by that much, you should have asked what he was doing that you weren't.  that would have been an amazing source of information.
