Any Advice For Fishing The Occoquan Reservoir This Weekend?

Featured Replies

The trick was getting into the big creeks down lake. Water had much better visibility and the fish were really shallow. Flipping baits into shallow cover as well as buzzbaits early and late in the day.

about to drop the boat in at Bull Run

  • 14.68, happy with that! Get shallower than 5' cause its always deeper than you think! You will be amazed at how shallow these fish will get this time of year!

Anyone know how the water levels and clarity are today?

Water has been steady dropping since Saturday evening. Stained water is working its way down the res. Backs of creeks will clear first with sediment slowly dropping out of the water column. Should be great by the end of the week and weekend. The sun will also help clear the water up!

Since Im staying in town this weekend, i might give it a shot Sunday.

Apreciate the heads up!  good Luck in the Tourney!

Didn't get out last night but I'll be doing some bank fishing this evening.  Just need to figure out where I want to do it.  Lake Ridge Marina is so close but I might try to hit Bull Run since I won't get a chance this weekend.  Hopefully the ground isn't soft and mucky.

Anyone have a Topo map of the Res?  Where can I purchase one?

Gonna try my luck Saturday Morning. probably launching from lake ridge marina, paying the $6 daily ramp fee.

Should I look for shoreline structure/cover early morning nd then main points and drop as the day heats up?

I have a topo map that I ordered directly from GMCO.  Apparently they also sell the maps at Fountainhead, or so I've heard.

yes, they defintely sell them at FH marina.  I think they're 6 or 7 bucks.

Thanks DJ, it's been tough to beak into the money lately. We do a 6 fish limit and last tx we had 28 boats show up which is about average for a summer tx. 9 teams had over 20lbs with 2 over 23lbs! My partner and I had 21.24 and should have had well over 25 with missed fish we had hooked up, flew out of the water and either threw the bait or came unbuttoned at the boat!

Speaking of which, i'm assuming y ou guys launch and weigh-in at FountainHead?

Yep, it's a long day for sure. I'm usually out of bed at 1:30am and on my way to the park by 2:30. I try to help everyone get launched and settled. I get there early so I can get a parking spot because I absolutely despise that walk up the hill! Fish all day, try to help with weigh in and get home about 6:30pm. Should be another good tx with lots of big fish and big weights. Can't wait for Sunday!!

Quan I'm on the hunt for big fish this Sun. during the tourney. If my partner shows up I think we have a chance. You and the fellas are some tough sukers! Either way its going to be much fun can't wait.

Jay~

You are going to have to step it up J!!
