Open Water Buzzbaits

I have used spooks and poppers in open water with marginal success.  Has anyone ever used a buzzbait in open water situations?  An example is fishing a hump in deeper water as opposed to shallow around pads or wood.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

i use buzzbaits in open water all the time...i actually hardly ever fish them in pads  or shallow...my fav is the double bladed but the single is ok too it just seems to call the fish haha

I use buzzbaits in open water as well as semi-weedy water. If there's a fish around that's willing to hit something on the surface, I don't know why a buzzbait shouldn't work as well as treble hook lures.

Absolutely! There's a myth that only big spook type baits are the only thing that can call fish up from the depths. Not true. I've seen a 9lb bass swim over 40 feet to eat a buzzbait right at the boat. They will go get them. The awesome thing about a buzzbait is that at any moment you can catch a giant. Some think it's due to a bass not getting a good look at the bait, some say its the sound/vibration, all I know is they work well in open water. There is a small ridge on lake Anna, that comes up to about 12-15' and is surrounded on all sides by 30-40' of water, no cover, in the middle of the lake. We had a couple 20 fish days a few years back using 3/8oz secret weapon brand buzzers.

Another thing I like about them is they cover water much faster than poppers/spooks/hollow frogs and are easier on the wrists. Years and years of walking the dog and lifting weights have given me a few aches and pains lol.

Yes, I've caught smallies in open water with a buzzbait, I use one that has a clacker on it to give it more noise.

Yes, buzzbaits excel in open water. I like to fish them across heavy current for river smallies as well. Really versatile bait.

The most vicious strike I think I have ever had happened in 20’ of water on a buzz bait.

Absolutely yes.  Use them anywhere there are fish and a buzzbait can get through.  I love catching fish on this crazy contraption.

Now hold on there hom skillet !!!  I have caught bass in ever kind of condition there is- Shallow-shallow-cover-grass-wood-cold water-warm-hot- BUT DEEP___ That is a very underutilized buzzbait condition. It is also one of the most productive areas of the water column that can produce both numbers and quality. When bass are schooling and attacking shad it can be an amazing/fun technique. I have caught bass over 30 ft of water. It is something that you should really gain confidence in. NOW IF YOU ONLY KNEW SOMEONE WITH SOME BUZZBAITS
