Battery Question

Featured Replies

Once again, previous owner.... anger!!!!

Battery hooked up to trolling motor is a Optima Blue top 34M.... a starting battery. NOT a D34M Deep Cycle.

Whats my options... use it or replace it?

It doesn't have a lot of reserve capacity but if it were me I'd give it a try and see how it does.

If anything, i guess Id have a killer starting battery since its still got original starting still in it. Lol

Can you sell your other starting battery and use the opti for your starting battery? Then put deep cycle batteries where you need them.

The original starting battery is OLD. XPS battery that isnt even in BPS system anymore. Lol.

Time to invest and update your batteries.

You don't need battery trouble when fishing.

Kayak Fisherman,

I'm sorry to hear the previous owner left issues for you to contend with. While others regularly use our starting batteries in deep-cycle applications, we obviously cannot recommend using a battery in an application for which it was not designed.  If you are looking at re-configuring the batteries in your boat, it would definitely be worthwhile to have your existing batteries load-tested, to determine if they need to be replaced.  Since you already know the previous owner was using a starting battery in a deep-cycle application, a load-test would really help identify the current state of that battery.  If both of your batteries still test fine, your BlueTop could then be put into storage in a fully-charged state, until it comes time to replace your current starting battery.

I go with Sam here. Batteries are so key to all we do when bass fishing, I think its worth investing to the devices that are fit-for-purpose in this arena.
