Started fishing couple years ago using spinning reels, but last year bought casting gear and I  love it , looking for some advice, I do some bird nests but its very seldom, so should I change  braid line for smaller diameter  braid (20-30lb)...to achieve longer  casting distance or keep the 50 lb ?

Keep the 50lb, going to smaller will not be an advantage and may cause issues by digging in.

i use the 30, 40, 50, 65, 80 and 100lb power pros and the 30 and 80 is not much different really so just keep the 50...my favs are the 40 and 65 though lol

There has been a lot of changes to braid the past the year to reduce the abrasion resistance and cast easier and further without back lashing. Most bait casting reels can handle line diameters about 0.010 to 0.0012 much smaller you will have problems handling the line or casting with a bait caster.....look at the line diameter, smoothness not the pound test.

I use 30lb Spider Wire Stealth on pretty much every one of my baitcasting reels.  I have always thought going with much more than 30 was a bit overkill.  Personally never had a problem with backlashes or digging in.

i'm using 50# powerpro on my curado/compre setup, it's my frogging/top water rig. when i hook a larger snakehead i get digging-ins sometimes. i'm considering going to 65# because of it. i would stick with 50#.

spool your line up very tight and you wont have digging....i have my brother hold the spool tight and crank it on while i watch him burn his hands and laughhh hahaha how mean i am lol...my friend used to go as far as tying his line to something and walking it off then spool it back on extremely tight while he walked back toward the tie off lol(just a wee bit overkill)

 

also the level winds on baitcasters dont move back and forth fast enough for my taste which is why i use nonlevel wind reels

I have found 30 lbs. to be my sweet spot on my Lew's. I have a couple with 20 and they cast well but not really a noticeable improvement in the 30lbs. but it does dig in on ocasion. This is not a reel problem as a crefull cast and a few yards pulled off by hand and the spool is good to go again. I have went with 40 and think the 30 does as well, and allows me to use lighter weights to get down as good, and in current very noticeable plus not much in the way as dig in's. I chose the 30 because it is stronger than my locked down drags and heavier  than any rod I am using it on for there rated max. For Pike and Muskie it is a different story.
