Working an Ika ?

Featured Replies

Tried the Ika out for the first time and was successful on smallies. Noticed that they were hitting it on the intial fall and I could only get 1 fish out of each hole. I tried bringing the Ika back to the surface & letting it fall slow again as I retreive it. That didn't work, all the fish I caught was on that first drop. I also tried slow retreives letting it scrape the bottom and tried short hops, nothing. Any Ideas?

For me, I have the best luck, casting it to whatever cover there is, let it sit for about 10 secs..then give a couple Small twitches..it's a second or 2 after the twitch, that the bass grabs it.. ;)

I have caught all of my Ika fish by letting it fall to the bottom on slack line.  Most of the time, this is where the strike occurs.  If not, I drag the bait back to me pretty slowly pausing every so often for varying lengths of time.

All my fish were caught rigging it backwards and letting it fall on slack line, let it set for a few seconds, then POP it up and let it fall back down on slack line. Rinse and repeat varying the amount of time between pops.

I've caught mine by rigging backwards, then letting it fall to the bottom. I slightly lift it up s it sits up and then I shake the tip of the rod. Usually get a bass to strike it when the tentacles go crazy

x2 I don't do too well with this bait myself but the success I have had was had by working it like a fluke twitch and settle or walking the dog underwater.

I do likewise; casting it to the cover and letting it sink there for a bit. Then I use a lift and drop (on slack line) retrieve, back to the boat or shoreline. Has always been a great producer for me, either on the initial drop or even during the above retrieve.

Has anyone here ever pegged a sinker to the Ika and worked it through thicker weeds?
