Today when I went fishing I decided to try some pitching to cover since there was a cold front. I was pitching a 4 inch norries bug on a 1/0 hook with 12 pound trilene on my 7 foot casting rod. I got nothing and then my friend was catching bass out of the same spots I was in with a senko. What was the problem?

THE PROBLEM WAS, YOU DIDN'T THROW A SENKO.

when you're fishing with a friend, it's the perfect opportunity to work as a team and really nail the fish.  Many times i'll go out with my friend and we'll throw different baits, not on purpose, we just gravitate towards different techniques.  If i'm throwing a plastic, and he's getting them on a spinnerbait, and i'm not, i'll switch to a spinnerbait and start getting them.  Just like if i'm getting them on a plastic, he'll switch to what's working.

You may have not been doing anything wrong at all, the fish just wanted something different than you were giving them.  If you see someone catching fish, and you're not, really try to think about what they're doing differently, even if it's the same bait.  If someone is outfishing you in the same location with the same bait, drop the pride and ask what they did, or watch to see what's different.

This just happened to me when i was on my fishing trip last weekend... couldn't touch them with a texas rigged rage tail monkey, lizard, rooster, culprit worm, anything but my buddy was slaying them on a weightless senko....

X2   the ROF and how a bait is worked can make a huge difference.

Rate of Fall- The other day I was fishing weghtless senko on 8# f/c in a hole for smallies. Got 4in 4 cast then broke my line and changed over to 8# mono. Got nothing after that. Could have fished the hole out ? but when I went back to f/c (barely could get the line to the hole,20 yds of line to a hole that  was 19yds away) just minutes later I picked up a couple more. I imagine it was R.O.F. cause it wasn't the bait.

Yeah we were throwing it on weed edges letting it sink then giving it a couple of jerks

It could have been any number of things, or the bass had a smaller strike window and he managed to get this bait in there. A senko is often the best or one of the best lures you can use, but other lures work better in many conditions. I do think rate of fall was probably the biggest factor. I have always found that the less weight you use, the better. With deep water or thick cover you need heavier weights though.
