Revo Decision

Featured Replies

Hey everybody. I'm interested in the Gen. 3 Revos, but have little experience with them. I want a high speed reel (7:1), and like the look of the SX or the STX. Does anyone have any recommendations as to which is better/what you prefer? Main use will be frogging.

I have the Revo S, but was leaning very close to the SX.  Ive heard some good things about it.  My Unlce got an STX, but it just doesnt feel all that smooth to me. My S feels better than the STX, in my opinion.  The STX comes in an 8.0:1 if that interests you at all. I would go SX to save a bit of money and get maybe a few more frogs

Well I only have experience with an STX, so take that into consideration.

For me, my frogging combo doubles as a flipping/pitching combo, if that idea interests you, then by all means get an STX, it's butter. If you just want a frogging combo, IMHO how often are you throwing frogs, so a $200 reel may not be worth it. So then maybe an SX is the better choice.

All I can offer is that the STX is phenomenal and is super smooth, great reel.

Good luck with your decision!

The only difference between the SX and the STX is the STX has better bearings, EVA knobs and a dual braking system.  Both reels are great reels so it is going to come down to preference.

The SX with the extended bent handle would make an outstanding frog rod and be less then the STX.

Thanks everybody. Hopefully I can put each on the rod I'll be using and see what I like. The quality was what I needed feedback on, and it sounds like either is a good choice. Thanks again!

I've owned all of the Revos in the Gen 3 lineup except the Premier, and the STX was by far the best of the bunch. You can actually get that reel in an 8:0:1 if you want something even faster than a 7:1:1. The Infini Brake system on the STX also allows you to fine tune the reel to the lure weight, or wind conditions much better than the SX which is mag only. If you are just gonna use it frogging and you are comfortable with using a mag brake only reel, then I guess going with the SX would save you some money. Go over to Americanlegacyfishing.com and sign up for their newsletter, and they will send you a $25 off coupon via email so you could snag a new STX for $174.99 which is a steal.

I have the 3rd Gen STX and I really enjoy it. You can tune just right with cent/mag brakes. Very light but at  the same time a very strong reel. My frogging reel is a Gen 2 SX reel. It's a work horse for that application. Its a magnetic braking system and once you dial it in right you will have no problems throwing frogs and worrying about backlashes. Now if you are interested in the Gen 3 SX, its 25% lighter than the Gen 2's and still has the same muscle. I would lean towards the SX if you are going to use it for just frogging. Besides it's a little cheaper than the STX.
