hey guys can yal tell me what reel ratios zre good for certain baits such as for cranks, plastics ect

What you need to focus on is how much line is retrieved with each reel handle turn. The spool diameter determine how much line is retrieved for each spool revolution. Reels with larger spool diameters like round reels can retrieve 28 inches of line for handle turn and be 6.3 to 1 ratio and a smaller low profile reel can retrieve 28 inches of line and be 7.0 to 1 ratio.

Speed is relative to your presentation techniques and the speed you prefer to fish.

just get the reel you like....if its a fast reel and you want to move the bait slow dont turn the handle as fast lol

x2 on the inches per turn as opposed to gear ratio.

 

Only 2 rules of thumb that I really abide by when choosing reel speed. 

 

-Faster retrieve for fishing heavy slop/cover with heavy line so I can pull fish out before they get tangled up.

-Slow retrieve for deep cranking, as it will save your arms and present baits slower.

 

Other than that it's really what I feel most comfortable with.

I agree. I prefer a reel that picks up 23-28 inches per turn, 19-20 for large cranks. I can always speed up, but I find it a real bear to slow down. Impatient I suppose.

I use a 6. something for everything except deep cranking and large spinnerbaits.

I use 7.xx for anything that involves slack line like topwater,texas rigged worms,and flipping. 6.xx for everything else except deep crank baits and big willow leaf spinnerbaits.

IPT is the real metric to look at as stated but for discussion sake lets say were looking at several reels from the same mode line. A 5:1 ratio will have more power and be less tiring for DEEP cranks. That's probably the #1 application for a specific reel.IMO is a 7:1 for jigging/flipping etc. Occasionally the fish will bite and swim right at you and the faster reel helps take up slack for a better hookset. Anything else is pure preference.

4.6:1 or 5.4:1 for cranking and slow rolling spinnerbaits; this reel ratio is the best for deep cranking and keeping fatigue down on you

 

6.4:1 for most everything else (the most versatile gear ratio there is and what to have if you are only going to have one)

 

7.1:1 or higher for flipping, pitching, & topwaters such as buzzbaits or for burning spinnerbaits

 

All of my spinning stuff is in the 5.x:1 gear ratio

 

I use all Abu Garcia stuff; Revo STX mostly.   Love em.
