Flipping Hooks

Featured Replies

Instead of just using jigs to flip I want to try beaver style baits and have a few makes from reaction innovations and Berkeley pit-boss, both are 4inch, also maybe some tubes in the 2.5-3.5 inch range.  I have read to use a 4/0 hook for beaver baits, but what brand and size do you guys like?  And do you rig them like a texas rig?  I purchased a few pegs and I think I have that covered.  I wanted to try a snell knot which I believe eliminates non straight shank hooks?

I have tried them all my favorite are  the Mustad Denny Brauer Grip Pin Max Flippin' Hook. The bait keeper on them tears up the baits less then any others I have tried. The plastic molded bait keepers like the trokars tear the bait up alot when you slide the biat over them because the are so large. The bait keeper also stays put unlike the gamakatsu I was using.

No, a straight shank hook is what a snell knot works best on. Now having said that I use Owner TwistLOCK flipping hooks. You can't use a snell with these hooks but it hasn't mattered in my experience. I was having horrible luck getting the hook set using straight shanks and the snell knot but when I switched to the Owner TwistLOCK my hooking problem went away. These hooks really helped my flipping a lot, I know plenty of guys use the snell and straight shanks with great results I just wasn't one of them. I use a 4/0 for 95% of my flipping.

Make sure you learn to tie the snell correctly if you go that route. Either way good luck to you

I use a 4/0 VMC Heavy duty flipping hook for both the exact same baits (Pit Poss, and R.I.. Sweet Beaver 4.20) OR a 4/0 Gamakatsu EWG Superline hook.

The worst flipping hook I've ever used is the Trokar. I've rolled points on a single fish, once that happens you can't get the point back. I've lost a ton of fish because of how big a hole they punch, and thirdly they tear up a bait something fierce.

Best flipping hook I've ever used isn't a flipping hook at all. It's the Gamakatsu Straight Shank Bronze hook. They're great about hook ups and they are phenomenally strong. The Heavy Cover Worm is a super hook, but the keeper sucks. I've taken to soldering the pin in place, and that works well enough.

I've got a pile of the new Mustad flipping hooks to use, but haven't really been on a flipping bite of late. Everything is geared towards a jig bite so far, so I have had much an opportunity to play much with them.

I am going with a snell knot, found how to tie online its easy to tie and has good breaking strength.  I own the 2/0 VMC flipping hooks and like them so I might try the 4/0 VMC ones..  Thanks for the replies..
