Mercury Water Pump Or Impeller??

Featured Replies

I have a 04 Merc.EFI 150 and it may need a pump or inpeller. Is this something that I can do myself? Or should I say is it hard to do? I hate to give a dealer $200 bucks if it  is a easy job?

I do my own.  The only tricky part is rotating the fly wheel to align the keyed drive shaft when you put the the lower unit back in.  It helps if you have a second pair of hands.  There are a TON of videos on Youtube that show the process from soup to nuts.

What Franco said- not all that hard, but time is money so that is cheaper to some than others.  Cheap parts for the most part.  An extra pair of hands is recommend though.

Changing impeller is easy. After doing this a few weeks ago with a buddy of mine, we found out a key piece of information....

When pulling the lower unit off, the motor should be in gear because if you pull off unit when in neutral, it's spring loaded and will pop into gear and blah blah blah something to that effect. Moral is, changing impeller was simple.

Never had put mine in gear...  Might be a motor specific thing.  My 115 elpto was easy, four or five bolts.  The Pro Max 2.5 Sport with a Torquemaster LU...there's a hidden bolt under the anode.  Each motor has it's "thing," so find a video that shows your motor.

Its fairly easy and fun.  Watch a couple of Youtubes.  I never knew about leaving it in gear and the only hard part was putting it back together and lining up the gears.  Which wasn't hard, it just took a little time to get it in there.  (I know, I know, that's what she said)

Anyway, You will feel good when you get done.

Its not motor specific, it just one of those things they don't tell you that works better.  In my Mariner shop guide it says to have it in Neutral.  But I've replaced it half a dozen times and so the last time I decided to watch a video and I took his advice it it just worked alot better that way.

Having said all that.... I have a 1984 motor so maybe a new model is different but i doubt it.
