St Croix Premier Trigger/ Crankbait Rods

Featured Replies

I am looking for my first real baitcaster rod.  I have a Premier spinning rod which I love so I wanted to get a Premier baitcasting rod.  I noticed that there is the Trigger rods and the Crankbait rods.  What is the difference?  Is it just the action?  Does anyone have both?  How do they compare?

I mostly throw plastics and recently been throwing shallow crankbaits consistently with the occasional spinnerbait.  Which rod should i go with?  How will the trigger rods handle crankbaits and how will the crankbait rod handle plastics?  I guess im looking for the rod that will suit my needs overall.

Also do i go with medium or medium heavy?  I know different rods/reels are best suited for specific applications but im looking to get the best overall set up for right now.

Let me know what you guys think.  Thank you in advance.

EDIT: Crankbait rod link has been fixed

Pick a trigger rod. The crankbait rods are all moderate action rods designed specifically for crankbaits.  An overall good choice would be a 7' Medium/Fast or MH/Fast depending on the type of lakes you fish. If you're in more slop and weeds then the MH will be better suited for you. If you're fishing more open water with grass, rocks then the medium would work just fine.

No differance between a trigger rod and a crankbait rod, both have triggers on the reel seat. That is a store, not factory designation..

Actually the only rod out of that link that is a Moderate Fast Tip action is a 6'10" Heavy power rod.. PC610HMF
The majority of the tip actions are Fast, and the majority of the rod powers are Medium to Medium Heavy..

As a custom rod builder that builds only on St Croix blanks, I would recommend for shallow running cranks a 6'6" to 7' Med Power, Moderate Fast tip to a Medium power, Fast tip.
For plastics a good 6'6" to 7' Medium Heavy power with a Fast to Xtra Fast tip action...

I agree both rods have triggers, but there is a big difference in actions. The list's above are both the same and not showing the crankbait rods available in the Premier line. The crankbait rod's in the Premier line from St. Croix rods can be found here,,,,,, http://www.basspro.com/St-Croix-Premier-Series-Crankbait-Rods/product/74391/     I would not choose the 6'10' 6'10 Heavy Moderate Fast "HMF" action for crank's, I want a true Moderate action, the reason being they have a more forgiving action to keep pressure on the treble's but still give without being so stiff they rip marginally hooked up fish loose. The list of premier crank'n rods is a good one.

Don't like using the BPS links..

The line up I stated is from the St Croix Premier casting rod page of the on-line catalog... :Victory:
