I have an Abu Garcia Revo S reel and an Abu Garciab Veritas Rod and currently using #20 braid. I've been seeing people say braid can mess up rods and reels. My question is, is that regarding cheap rods and reels or will it mess mine up too and what are some things I can do so this doesn't happen. If you recommend a different type of line let me know and also what # for a 7', med-hvy and hvy rod. Thanks.

Braid is mainly bad for rods that don't have ceramic inserts in their line guides. I believe the Veritas does have ceramic guides. If your guides are a silver metal, braid can groove them. Actually, the braid doesn't do it, the dirt that braid picks up is the problem.

20 pound braid on a baitcaster?   I would think it is to small in diameter.  I could be wrong but start at 40lb and go up from there.   Braid won't hurt your setup BTW.

As long as you can manage the small diameter of 20# then you're perfectly fine. Make sure you back off your drag a bit. No stretch so you need a little forgiveness. Have fun!

Ive never used over 20# I have 10,15,20# braid on my bc reels. Get the base amount of the braid on the spool very tight. Guides, well from ugly stick on up no issues over ten years using braid nearly exclusively.

The first generation of superlines could be damaging to equipment but all of the recent lines are very slick and won't hurt your equipment at all. Except for my Musky rods, I don't use anything stronger than 20 pound test. I don't fish the really heavy cover very often so I don't have the need for 50 pound test. The lighter lines also improve casting distance.

Thanks for the replies. When I first started using it I would get backlashes because I wasn't use to the small diameter but then I got use to it and I like that I can cast a mile with it. But ive been thinking about switching to heavier # braid or I have heard good things about fluorocarbon but never personally used it.

Lol, yeah I have heard that from a lot of people or if the spool would keep spinning and they would have to grab on to the line it would cut them then. Ive tied about 15 or so lines the last two weeks and havent had any problems, lets hope it stays that way.

If all you've used on a baitcaster is 20# braid, you might try mono before jumping to fluoro. Fluoro handles way differently than light braid. Also, cheap fluoro is usually harder to work with. I would advise you to buy a spool of 12# Sufix Elite and see how you like it. If it works and you like it, then think about a good spool of fluorocarbon.

I 100% didn't like fluoro, went right back to PP 50 slick 8. Casts great and really disappears in the water I fish.

Well I just bought some #50 braid and #15 mono. I have another baitcaster and I will throw the 50 on one and 20 on another and see which one feels right.
