Interesting Way To Catch Fish

So I was out shore fishing the local pond today.  I didn't land any bass, but landed two small pike 18" and 20".  The interesting thing though on the 2nd pike, I caught them both using a fluke...but on this guy the hook wasn't in his mouth.  I was like weird?  Then noticed that the line actually gotten tangled around his mouth.  I was like wow how did he not get free?  So he must've tried to smack it while I was jerking it.  I untangled the line from one side of his lip and poof he dropped off.  Curious has anyone else caught a fish like that?  I should've taken a picture, but I was so perplexed that it didn't cross my mind to do it.  Actually does it count as a catch now, since I didn't hook it?

Guys in my parts target gars using a piece of rope as a lure. Their teeth get tangled in the rope and they can't get free.

My one and only gar was caught with the line wrapped around it, but that's the only fish I've caught that way.

That's pretty cool

I've never gotten a pike on just the line, but I've had through the top of the lip, in the gills on the outside, and skin hooked between the eyes. Not sure but I think they hang around baits for a bit before striking, so a jerk or tug can foul hook easy.

I have caught bass ice fishing that weren't hooked. The bass would have the head of the shiner in its mouth and the hook wouldn't be in the fish

I caught a shiner on a spoon once... didn't even know it. Upon closer examination, the treble hook somehow stuck into the fish's back.

I've caught bass on plastics before where the hook bend was stuck behind it's bottom tooth pad and the hook eye was wedged against the roof of the fishes mouth and had it's mouth propped open. I've had sunfish grab the tail of my bait and not let go until I had already lifted them out of the water.
