Exposed Or Weedless Hooks On A Rig?

Featured Replies

Alot of the A rig setups I've seen all have the hooks exposed. Anyone fish an A Rig with the baits rigged to be weedless...is there any advantage or disadvantage as far as hooking up with one way vs the other?

I prefer to fish open jigheads on my A rig for the better hookups but it's just not a good option if you're fishing around standing timber, unless you like losing lots of $20 rigs.

You shouldn't be fishing the A-rig where you need weedless hooks.

This is total BS, I've caught plenty of bass on the rig around grass.

I've tried both and MUCH prefer the "weedless" weighted swimbait hooks to open jig heads. My fishing buddy only uses open heads and he gets snagged WAY more than I do. I've not had the least trouble getting solid hookups using the swimbait hooks. I do however make absolutely certain that all 5 of my hooks are sharp before every trip, if one isn't up to standard I either replace or sharpen it.

I've only tried Owner Beast and Mustad weighted swimbait hooks so far but haven't had any problems with either of them. I'm sure the Gamakatsu's would work just as well.

I ask the question because the water in my lake is dropping and exposing a crazy amount of Milfoil. There's still deep open water to fish, but chances of getting into the grass are still possible.

Should have no issue with fishing it with weedless hooks as long as it's on the right rod/line so you can set it hard.

I fish both and obviously prefer the weedless around stumps/grass. I havent had a problem with hook ups as of yet. The action is a little different than that of an open jig head so its a good idea to try both and see which the fish prefer if the cover allows a choice. Make sure the swimbaits are rigged perfectly straight with the weedless hooks!
