Broke My Chatterbait At The Hook Today

Recommended Posts

Could I use the spinner on another one of my jigs and get the same action? I think I'd prefer a weed guard anyway

You're probably going to have to use a split ring to make it work but as long as you can find a jig with the right eye you'll be able to do it.

heck yes, just make sure you have a horizontal line tie to hook the split ring to.

A split ring will kill some of the vibration/sound that a true Chatterbait has.

It will also cause the lure to "die" during the retrieve and not vibrate at all.

I have some custom Chatterbait knock-offs that are made that way. They are in my do-not-use collection.

Wayne,

My experiences with vibrating jigs utilizing split rings are about 180 degrees from yours. I have used both the original Chatterbait and the vibrating jig made by Siebert. I much prefer the Siebert version over the original. I fish it on braid and if its vibration were any stronger the rod would pop out of my hands. It seems to appeal to the fish very well. So well in fact that  I just ordered a few more from Mike. Just my $0.02, your experiences may vary.

I ordered a bunch of blades from jann's netcraft and have thrown them onto various jigs with pretty good success this year. I got sick of the horrible hooks on the chatterbait, and figured it couldn't be any worse so I tried it. I find the grass jigs work best, and the split rings don't hinder the action one bit.

Don't judge all homemade chatterbaits by what you experienced from one guy. He likely did not know what he was doing and used the wrong style head or some cheap blade.

I have some custom 1/4 big profile chatters that a friend of mine gave me, he made them with owner hooks. They have a very cool head shape, I think it is a spinnerbait head. Those suckers will vibrate your reel off the rod in shallow water, they vibrate twice as much as a true chatterbait.
