Tonight I missed a fish on a jig, what do all of you use for a follow up? And if the fish was actually brought up to the surface and then came off the jig, what are the chances of getting it to bite the jig again or biting a follow up bait?

Probably not if you stuck it, they usually take off.

Not saying its impossible, just going by my 40 years of experience.

Now Iv heard bass up north will come back, several Pros have told me that you can catch the same fish of a bed 5 times up north, thats not happening in Florida.

If you stuck it your chances go down alot, I usually leave it alone if I stuck it and come back in a couple hours or so and work her with a different color jig, or a soft plastic set up!

I really like to have a wacky rigged senko or a trigged craw to toss on a missed fish (jig or spinner bait). If they have been hooked and lost sometimes yes sometimes no.

However with smallmouth you never know. I lost a jumping smallie on a jig and beaver. I only got the jig back. My partner was fishing a tube in the same area and caught a fish almost immediately. It was also a smallmouth and when he boated it, that fish spit my beaver out on the deck.

A common mistake by anglers after they miss a fish is to reel it in quickly, and cast it back out. If you just leave it there, there's a chance the fish will come back and get it... Work it just like you did when you got hit, the fish is probably still close. like said, if you didn't stick it there's a better chance. But by reeling your bait in, your putting the odds in favor of the fish.

Thanks for all the answers so far.  So what I have gathered is that for the missed fish, either just leave the jig where the hit was and hopefully it will come back again, or wait a few hours and work the jig the same way.  Now for the follow up baits, do most of you use craws for a follow up or something completely different?

In my experience a senko is the best follow up bait I have found. 60% of the time it works every time.

There is no follow-up bait for a jig...Simply recast.
