Spinning Rod Purchase Help Needed

Recommended Posts

I know the topic has been beaten up pretty well on baitcasters (some spinners too) and I did use the search function but I wanted to get some input before I make my final decision.  I am looking at getting a new spinning rod.  Something around 6'6", medium power and fast action.  I will be pairing it with a Daiwa Legalis 2500 reel.  I am looking to keep it in the $100 or under range.

Also, I just bought a Abu Garcia Veritas rod for $80 on sale today at Dick's without knowing much about it and am a little worried by the reviews on breakage I have been reading as this will be the first rod that I shell out more than $50 for.  I fish mostly from shore and kayak so I don't want anything that is too fragile.  Thanks in advance for the input.

For $80 that rod is a great buy. Its very light and sensitive for its price range. Abu Garcia has some quality control issues sometimes, but if you do have an issue their customer service is top notch. I bought a Veritas a few weeks ago and love it.

Fenwick Elite Tech you can buy them online for 99.99.  IMO the best rod and bang for your buck, it fishes like a 200 dollar rod.  (I fish them side by side with my GLX and Cumaras)

I also own a Veritas (Although casting), I agree with what he says, still a good rod.

Check out powell diesel, fenwick or falcon and bass pro carbon lite before you buy that abu. IMO if a company cannot qc or makes a product that delicate then it isn't worth the money and time.

Literally just got my *** 13 rods (spinning and casting). They look amazing. I would say try one out unless you can get a St Croix Premier for $50-$60 as people here have reported seeing them on sale at DSG.

Call me ignorant, but who makes the Premier?

Sorry I should have been more specific. St Croix makes the Premier.

So, a follow up question. I am going to go to BPS or Cabela's this weekend to look at rods. Which has a better selection? Both are about 1.5 hours away but in opposite directions of me so I can't make it to both. Thanks for all the advice so far!

BPS without a doubt.

BPS has a much better selection IMHO

Not here they don't. Cabelas has a much bigger collection in Pa than BPS. If you want to see half the rod section filled with ugly stiks then go to BPS.

I agree with lmbfisherman, I've been on the bandwagon of these rods since they were released, in fact I wanted to try it so bad I got my first one direct from Fenwick as the retailers wouldn't have them before it was too cold to fish. Ever since that first one I was hooked, I have 2 spinning and 2 casting models and you aren't going to find a better rod for the price and you can get them for $99.99 shipped to your door from a few different online retailers. The reason for me liking the rod is that I own a few custom rods as well as some higher end rods and I could not believe the sensitivity and the crisp blank on a rod at this price point so get yourself a 6'9" M-XF and you'll be on your way.

Yep, Cabelas is 20 minutes from me and BPS is like 40 minutes and I drove to the BPS only to find a better selection at Cabelas, normally it isn't like that but in PA the Cabelas has a large selection or rods.

I have seen good things on here about the academy ethos rods competing with the rods in this price range. I am starting to look at rods in this range as well. Any other thoughts?

Yup, smalljaw is the guy that turned me onto the Smallmouth series.  I prefer a fast action to an extra fast for most of my fishing.  I would therefore suggest the 6'10" MF.  Mine is paired with a Curado 51E, and I love that combination.  I pretty much will throw anything within its weight range on this rod.

falcon seems to offer a lot for the money. Especially according to their site only 1 rod series, the HD, is not assembled here in the states. I am pretty sure I am going to purchase an original for my next rod.
