Inherited Rod From Grandfather

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm new to the forum and fairly new to fishing. I first got into it last year and bought myself a simple spinning rod and reel.

I just inherited a rod and some other equipment from my grandfather. The rod doensn't have a reel and I don't know if there is a specific type it would need, or if it is not supposed to have one

The rod is an 82" 2 piece, fairly flexible. It has "Conolon Live Fiber 6303" printed on it. Anyone know anything about this rod?

Here is a photo of the stuff that was passed to me.

Sweet knives...those hula poppers in the package?

That's not a flyrod. It's a spinning rod. It has what they call a Tennesee handle. You use a spinning reel. the silver rings allow you to position the reel where you want it. Fly rods have a different reel seat and snake guides.

Those packaged lures look like topwater frogs.

It is a fly rod. It has a reel seat at the end of the handle. A spinning rod with a Tennessee handle would have a solid handle.

The only reason I would say its not a fly rod is that it would be very short for a fly rod. And the tackle that he got with it is not flies, but regular lures.

HA! A Debate!

There is definitely a variety of stuff here.

The 2 lures in the packages are top water frogs (for bass I assume). Found them here: http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-XPS-Lazer-Eye-Tender-Toad/product/20755/

I assume the heavy weights 17 lb line and large hooks were used for deep sea. So I assume there was more gear that didn't get passed on, Like a rod for deep sea. I don't think there is enough 17 lb line to be useful.

There was a small fly or two in there too.

I know I will be able to use some of this gear, but still don't know about the rod.  The reel seat is adjustable, I can slide it to the top of the handle. The handle is made out of cork. There were some rusty hooks that I a m going to throw out

I am still very new to the sport, so I don't really know much of what gear or lures are used for certain types of fishing.
