Not wanting to spend over $300 on a scope for .30-06...have looked at Leupold VX-2 but Redfields are cheaper and sound to be good ones for the money...Any advice for someone not wanting to spend over $300 but preferring to spend closer to $200?

Look at Nikon.  They make a good scope and right in that price range.

Leopold, Nikon, Simmons, BSA is a gamble, Bushnell. Thats all I got off the top of my head.

As stated earlier Nikon makes some decent stuff, I have a Nikon on my Encore 209/50 barrel and it's treated me real nice. Now with that being said Leupold is my scope of choice, I have 5 of them and love everyone of them. If you can swing the Leupold do it, they have a lifetime warranty and they stand behind it 100%.

I have used the Bushnell scopes with the BDC option it has the bullet drop compisation out to 450/500 yards with no hold over or error. You just dial in the distance using

the top turret knob. The knob is marked for distance. The scope comes with extra rings

for the turrets for each bullet weight in your caliber. You

just install the correct bullet weight your using. Then sight in the scope at 100yds set the ring at 100yards and your good to 450/500 yards with no error.

The Bushnell banner scope with the BDC option can be found for $100. I been using the Bushnell scopes with this option for well over 30+ years now.

In low light conditions these scopes are very clear and lite up as it gets darker.

I refuse to purchase any scope that doesn't have this dial in BDC option. With those scopes that have the dots on the crosshairs aren't for

each bullet weight your guessing. Remember using a 100 yard zero as the distance increases so does the error. with the mechanical adjusting turret

it'd dead with distance you dial it to.

Remember to dope your scope.

They figure out where there bullet is hitting. There scope doesn't have the BDC option.

I'm a BIG Vortex fan, so I would look at their glass first. But of you are looking at the big 3, in that price range. My order would be.

 

1. Bushnell Elite

2. Nikon Monarch

3. Leupold VX - 2

Ill 2nd the bushnell banner..it's a great scope that gathers light really well. I can't say enough good things about it, I actually took an older leupold off my 6mm Remington for it. It's a great value and its low light performance has been a huge asset whitetail hunting when the deer are moving before my eye can identify them.

I use Bushnell scopes on all my rifles. I couldn't figure out why my brother would come out so early out of his stand. I could still see for another 30 minutes or so. He scope was the problem. It wasn't as clear as my Bushnell scope was.
