Ugly Stik For Fly Fishing

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I was thinking about doing fly fishing first and then go on and buy another rod for bigger things but I found the Ugly Stik BWS 11070 (here) which has amazing reviews everywhere, and got a really good score for weight test. Would that rod work for fly fishing aaaand snakeheads fishing? Or do I need the Ugly Stik for Snakeheads and another for fly fishing?

Thanks in advance!

That is a conventional heavy tackle rod, not a fly rod.  If you wanted a fly rod for snakeheads, I'd be looking for an 8/9 or 9/10 wt. fly rod.

Thanks for your answer! I'm thinking about a rod that could work as a fly rod and a medium action rod. Fly rod for small fish, medium action rod for snakeheads. What do you think?

There really aren't any dual purpose fly rods out there.  The reel seat, and snake guides are somewhat specialized to fly reels and line. You're really looking for two setups.

Awesome! Thanks! I think I'll buy it since I got it used for $20 bucks and it is in really good condition. I'll be moving to DC where I can use it for bass fishing and snakeheads!

You might be able to catch some snake heads with that rod, but I don't think you'll be catching many flies...

I scrolled down and saw that they make fly rods in that model. It looks to me like thats a fly rod in the picture too because of the reel seat. I say get a cheap combo that already has the backing and fly line on it. I have a $150 combo. Its a 6wt, 9ft, 2 piece rod and I love it!

I wouldn't use a fly rod for snakeheads.  At least in Florida and and the snakeheads are smaller here, these fish are caught in areas with a lot of muck and slop.  You could land them on fly in open water, but pulling them out of slop could be problematic. I use a mh inshore rod and 4000 spinning reel with 20# braid and 40# leader, most people down here fish heavier than that for them.

The picture of that ugly stick does not show the rear grip, the pic at first view is misleading.
