what line do you recommend for swim baits about 1-4oz?

 

Braid?

 

Mono?

 

I know that backlashes with braid can result in lost baits...

 

what are your thoughts?

Rope, 80lb braid, is what I use for musky lures in that weight range.  Tie a good knot and don't get overconfident with the brakes and you shouldn't have to worry about losing baits with birdsnests

To be honest mono woul be you're best bet. Either P-Line CXX or Berkley Big Game is the best for the price. You can get 500yd spools of 25lb Big Game or $9. I'm curentley using it and have no problems with it. Also with mono you won't snap baits off like you would with braid when you backlash(common problem). You also get more stretch so if your fishing a glide type bait it wouldn't get tangled like it would with braid. The good thing about mono is that if you are using something that sinks, it sinks. If you're fishing say a Huddleston, it will sink at a good rate and faster. But if you were using braid it would sink slower. This is just my opinion though, different strokes for different folks. Plus when you backlash with mono, it comes out so much easier. Think about it. When you're fishing say frogs, it sinches down pretty good. But when you're throwing a bait between 2-4oz's, it sinches down really good.

many swimbait guys use 25# mono according to my reading.

 

some guys, like Matt Allen use all braid.

 

Both have their place it seems, pros and cons.

Braid is a ***** when it backlashes, but rarely breaks or "fails" Most alabama rig guys chunk braid.

Mono, well once you get ONE kink, its done, IMO

 

I would like to hear more on the discussion too, as I am a novice and want to learn all I can about the bigger bait chunkin.

 

I will probaly use a mixure of all 3......some mono for topwater, flouro when stroking and braid when using arig/really expensive baits

I'd say mono is more forgiving for the swimbait beginner.  In my experience, casting a larger swimbait is considerably different than smaller bass lures, so master the technique first with mono and then move to braid if you'd like.
