I was watching the college tourney. Now after all is said and done and the one college angler gets to fish the Classic, what happens if he gets in the money? I would assume he wouldn't be able to accept it. Anyone have any info on this?

Good question. I imagine he'd have no problem keeping it since you'd be hard pressed to find an "amateur" tourney fisherman who hasn't taken some prize money from some kind of tournament at some point. There'd be no way they could limit eligibility unless the stipulation was that they couldn't take prize monies only while they were on the college scene. Furthermore, NCAA doesn't regulate college fishing and they're the ones who make the rules in the other sports. And lastly, a college angler who gets to the classic and actually wins would have their ticket punched into the Elites so I doubt they'd be too concerned about their eligibility...there's 500k other reasons as well.

Fishing is not NCAA sanctioned as has been mentioned so he can keep the cash.  That is also why they can get individual level sponsors and not break any rules.

 I fish in college and if you ever bring up fishing around a girl 95% of the time she mentions fishing with her gpa/parents when she was 5. Bass fishing is literally 3 steps above floor hockey in terms of impressing girls lol.

Depends on the club. In my club we have about 20% of the tournament winnings return to the club. If you win a boat it goes to the club. The classic is a different ball of wax. For that you really are representing yourself more than you are the club. It really depends on the club what happens to the winnings. Honestly I never want the NCAA to get into bass fishing because it would be destroyed. Sponsorships and tournament winnings literally keep us from going bankrupt. If I had to pay full price for every rod/reel/lure I owned I would be so far in debt.  Also would the FLW and Boat Us get along? How about private tournaments? With the NCAA running the show they would limit a lot of things.

well he gets a 10k check just for being there. it would be neat to know whether or not he gets to keep any of it.

I imagine if he didn't even get to keep the money it wouldn't be to hard for him to get sponsors after being in the classic.

On another note...how would you y'all feel if a college angler won the Classic?  Well..actually, how do you feel about a college angler making it to the Classic through the college tournament series, given it's not open to everyone....just college anglers...who attend only certain colleges that are part of the circuit.  Is this fair?

If you work your butt of in school to make it to a top tier university or any college in the bracket that should be enough to go to the classic. That is years of work in the making, hours of studying and many restless nights. This does not even take into consideration the time we spend fishing tournaments to even make it to our national championship.  Tell me the last time KVD, Ike, Swindle, etc had a tournament on saturday/ sunday then an MCB final on monday. College competition has grown rapidly. it is no longer borrowing your dad's tracker but borrowing your uncles triton t21an prefishing for a week before a tournament. It  is a ton of work and completely fair if we work this hard. Other than that its like a d3 school wanting to compete in the national championship

FYI with Jordan Lee being the rep from college this year it really could happen Guntersville is his home lake and he is a stick, he has won a couple BFL's there and came in like 3rd in the most recent everstart on wheeler

Fact remains, not everyone can qualify for the Classic via this venue.  In fact, it's very exclusive because the public cannot enter it.

 

For years, people complained a woman could make it to the Classic via the WBT (Women's Bassmaster Tour).  Their reason?  It was exclusive to women only.

 

I'm both surprised and disappointed that folks are seemingly ok with the college tournament series sending one person to the Classic, but they were all up in arms when the WBT did the exact same thing....and it was more open to the public than the college series!

 

There were other "reasons" people cited for why a WBT champion shouldn't have been in the Classic.  Every single one of those "reasons" could be applied to the college series as well. 

 

You can't have it both ways folks. If you were against a WBT champion going to the Classic, then you should be against a college series champion making it too.

In theory isnt it open to the public they just have to be a student at a school first? Its not an NCAA sport its a club activity. I saw a couple schools with older members on the fishing team that were legit students of the university.
