Spool Shaft

Featured Replies

Let me just start by saying I don't know very much about the insides of a baitcaster. I took mine apart to check and make sure everything was going okay because my spool tension knob wasn't working correctly. It wouldn't get as tight as it needed to be for most lures, even though it was all the way tightened. After taking it apart, I found my problem. The spool (pinion?) shaft had broken in half! I had done a few casts where I accidentally engaged the reel while it was still spinning and was greeted by a horrible grinding noise, and after searching the forums here, it sounds like that's how it broke. The reel is a Daiwa Exceler 100H. I have checked Daiwa's website and searched google, but I'm not sure where to find a replacement. I thought of just supergluing it together, but after reading how most people don't even lube them based on how tight it is I'm not sure that's the best idea. Are the shafts specific to brand or model. or is it a standard size? I'm hoping I can just replace it, and get it back in good shape, thanks for any help!

I believe that alot of Daiwa models use a free floating spool shaft, aka, its a two piece shaft. That grinding noise is just the pinion gear re-engaging the spool.

By reading your problem, I would venture to say your issue is a very simple one. Inside the spool tension knob there is a washer (sometimes carbon fiber, other materials, etc) If there is a dimple in it, that would be your problem. Just taking it out and flipping it over will solve your problem. Add a drop of oil if its dry and you should be good to go.

Sent an email over to daiwa at abut 3pm est, haven't heard back yet, hopefully they have one. I do not believe it's a two piece spool shaft. It's shown as one piece on the exceler parts diagram http://www.daiwa.com/PartsDiagram/PartsDiagram/EXC100H.pdf (part number 8). When I take the tension knob off I don't see a washer, just a little circle of plastic or rubber. My pinion shaft is not exactly in half and the two pieces are pretty jagged in the middle. I may have another problem though. I put in both pieces of the shaft to see if it would be back to normal thinking maybe one of the pieces had fallen out and that's why it was messed up. When I put it in and tightened the spool tension knob, the side plate with the magnetic brakes pushed out. There was a decent sized gap between the frame and the plate. I don't think that was like that before. I'm fairly certain the side plate is secured as well as it can be, and I'm not sure why it's happening.

What we mean by two piece spool shaft is that a pinion shaft is used as opposed to a solid shaft on the spool that extends thru the pinion. The broken shaft pieces are not matched up making it too long and pushing on the opposite side case. The spool tension should be backed way off when installing the side plates. The tension cap assembly consists of a thin rubber spacer, a thicker carbon spacer and a felt like washer. The parts are on the schematic you linked to. The pinion may be damaged too depending on long and severely it was grinding. Members here get a 10% discount on service if  you'd like it gone thru.
