Just purchased a new calcutta 100b. I have to tighten the star pretty tight to get full drag. Is this typical of the calcutta series?

Just checked my Ambassadeur 4600c, and it seems pretty much the same way. Guess I just never noticed before.

You might want to ask that on some of the swimbait websites like SU or SN. A lot of people use round reels including me. I just haven't used this exact one. Hope this helps.

If it's brand new, could be grease on the drag washers. I had that problem on my Curado 200E when I received it. Now I strip, clean and re-lube all my new reels before first use.

I usually only run (approximately) 2-5 pounds of drag so I've never even cranked the drag all the way down on my Calcuttas. I just played with 4 of them and you DO have to get the drag star pretty tight to get full drag.  I don't know if there is the same drag system in my TE Calcuttas and Conquests as in the "B" model however...

Thank you Goose for checking. Sounds like the same thing. I've done some google searches today and I have obviously been setting my drags to tight. I found from several sources, that it's not necessary to crank them all the way down. You would think after all these years, I would know that. Appreciate your help good buddy.

Kinda old Thread but I just saw it.

 

I did not like the feel of the drag in my 100B so I sent it to Mike at DVT and he replaced the drag washers with the Carbontex Drag Washers and now all is well.. I also have an older silver Calcutta 100 and a Conquest 100 and I had a CTE100GT. The drag on the 100B was a totally different feel than the other three 100's. It felt like you had to tighten and tighten just to get any kind of decent drag. With the other 100's, the drag got stronger the more you turn the drag star but you don't really have to get their drag stars crazy tight to get good drag pressure.

Yup the Calcutta 100B has a max drag pressure of 9.5lbs, most Abu rounds run max 8.0 - 9.0lbs of pressure..

Carbontex pad upgrades, fresh drag spring washers, can bring pressures of 10 - 11lbs.

A mystery to me is why the need to use 9.5# or more of drag, I can understand wanting to make the operation of moving the star easier, but I wouldn't use that much drag.

That's all I want. Can't deal with needing to use a pair of pliers, just to try to get 3# of drag.
