Crankbait Set Up

Featured Replies

What is every ones preferred crankbait set up ? rod, line, reel, etc

A good starting point would be a Medium Heavy Moderate Fast 7' rod, a reel with a lower gear ratio, something like a 5.4:1, 12# test FC  line.  This will cover a lot of different cranks and get you started.   Once you get into it more you will find out that you will want 3 or 4 crankbait rods to more finely tune  your crankbait fishing.

I've got a Lews LH 6.4:1 with a Okuma CVX M/MF, 50 lb pp braid with 8 foot 12lb mono leader.   I'd probably use fluoro if I didn't throw top water poppers and spooks all the time with it.  The length of the leader could be shorter, but I don't like retying.

This one only throws Shad raps, shallow shad raps, originals, flat raps, spook jr., zara puppy, rebel pop-rs and popping frogs on that rod.

My second is a LH BPS Pro Qualifier 5.2:1 with BPS Cranking stick in MH/F, 50 lb pp braid with 8 foot 12 mono leader.

This one throws flukes with underspins, swimbaits from 1/4 to 5/8, rat-l traps and other lipless and strike king XDs and DT raps.

I have an avid 70MM with a chronarch 50mg for shallow and medium cranks. It's taking a while to get used to how great this combo casts. I've sent a few pretty deep into the trees.
