Looking To Build Some 110 Jerkbaits From Blanks

Featured Replies

I've found some megabass 110 type clone blanks and I am wanting to try my hand at painting some jerkbaits and was wondering who has tried this and how did the nock off blanks preform?

What blanks did you use and what hooks/rings did you use? How did they

1- sound?

2- suspend?

3- were they durable?

I have got prices on katsuage 4 hooks and split rings from Megabass that I'll use for hooks...

Could you build them for cheaper than Rick Clunns STX?

Yes, without paint and eyes you are looking at about $5 each

I'm hoping they are a little nicer than the RC

Well make me a couple, Ill try them out at Melvern!!!

Lol, I didn't get any help last weekend.

I think I'd be really tempted to try a blank with no paint, just clear. Maybe put some eyes on it and one stripe of black on the back. I bet the smallies at Melvern would kill it like that.

Yea that's the good thing , most of my favorite colors of stick baits will be fairly simple...

The bad news is I just spent $35 on blanks and I still have to spend another $35 on hooks and I still need an airbrush and that's $100 for a good one and probably $50 in paint!

OUCH!!!

$220 would buy a lot of 110s!

I too have often been tempted to get some clear blanks and put eyes on them. You can buy blanks off of ebay. Where did you find the blanks?

Chris has an airbrush already for painting baits, pretty sure it's a nice one too. I'm sure he'd be willing to let you at least try it out to see if you like the one he has.

Does Chris paint his own baits?

He was going to get into it but I think the 60 and 70 hour work weeks kind of took up all his time to get into it.

The blanks aren't that bad but if they are like the real 110s you will want to find a super light hook to use or it will sink.

I've been debating doing this as well.  Just scored an airbrush from Hobby Lobby on clearance.

Was going to order some blanks from that same site.  I need to email him first and see what kind of hooks and split rings he recommends to get true suspending lure.

By the time I'm done changing hooks/split rings on a rick clunn knock off it pushes those baits to over 10 dollars as well so making my own would make sense in the long run.

There are several online retailers that sell that particular knock-off and I bought a few awhile back.  If you are asking whether they are exactly like a $27 Megabass Ito 110 the answer is NOPE.  The ones I got were some of the nicest knock-offs I've seen, with chrome finish and good plastic quality.  When I test floated them, they suspended head UP which is not the attitude that most prefer on a jerkbait.  I corrected the problem with a little lead tape before painting and the lead doesn't show.  Decent jerkbaits.  But do they have all the moves, including the subtle body roll of an original 110?  Sorry, no.

I've bought and painted about 50 different knock-off baits through the years.  Many went direct to the trash can after the first outing, some worked so-so, a few had an action that was different from the original but were good in their own right and caught fish.  But I never found a single knock-off that looked and acted exactly like the original bait they were ostensibly copying.  Sad but true.

I didn't get any love on the pink but I've caught a few on the pink

The finish was a little thick and they slow sink but you'd never know if you fish them with a short pause.

I have a boat in boat in my garage and one in the shop. I guess I could cover the one in the shop and fire up the wood stove but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I still have plans to have another bunch of them done soon but I've got a jack plate to put on first!

I will say I learned a lot on the first batch and expect the next batch to come out allot cleaner and nicer!
