Bassin' Near Kansas City, Missouri?

Featured Replies

So my mom and them live in Kansas City, Missouri about 2 minutes from the Kansas/Missouri line - turn one way down their street and you're in Kansas, turn the other way and you're toward Missouri. Can anyone point me toward some solid fishing spots around the area? (Missouri or into Kansas is fine) Really want to trailer the boat up there with me and get my line in some new water.

THANKS!

Kansas side:

Shawnee Mission Park

Olathe lake

Cedar Lake

Gardner lake (lots of docks)

Kill Creek

you should find fish in all of those places. SMP and Kill Creek require Johnson County Parks and rec. passes that can be bought at local WalMarts

166 pages of bassin all around KC on both sides of the state line! I'd be willing to answer any questions you have about any of the places I've fished around here. La Cygne is probably about your best bet this time of year, it's aobut an hour south of KC.

You can fish any of them, just can't run fast or at all on them. You need a special permit for Shawnee Mission and Kill Creek, neither of which are worth it for an out of state guy. Gardner sucks, it got LMBV a few years ago and it's nothing but dinks. Olathe is probably the best of the bunch with good numbers and decent size. Cedar has low numbers but good quality but it's only 50 something acres and about 1/3 of that isn't fishable because it's so shallow.

If you want to stay on the Missouri side you're really limited without having to buy a permit for every lake that gets pretty pricey. Belcher Branch is less than a hour north of KC MO on the Missouri side and is a pretty good little lake. Lots of weeds and timber and some good quality fish up to 5-6 pounds. Not sure if there's a HP limit but it's small enough to get anywhere on the lake with a TM and just use the big motor to load.

On the KS side you have Perry Lake at around 11,000 acres about an hour from KC. No HP limit and some studly fish, green and brown. Problem is they're hard to find at times and if you don't know the lake it can really be a lot of work just to get bit.

To the south you have La Cygne at 2,600 acres, also about an hour from KC. Also no HP limit and produces the biggest largemouth in the state pretty much every year (up to 10lbs). It's a warm water discharge lake and it's stocked with Florida Strain largemouth though so they can be very hard to catch despite the highest population densities in the state.

To the southwest you have Melvern at 7,000 acres a little over an hour from KC. No Hp limit and a good population of Smallmouth and decent population of spots, and a moderate population of largemouth. Usually pretty easy to catch the smallmouth from 8-13 inches but the bigger fish can be tough to find but when you get them in the 18" range they are tanks.

Hillsdale is probably the closest lake to KC with no HP limit. It's about 4,000 acres with lots of standing timber but the bass population is pretty low. I've been catching some decent numbers of fish and decent size lately out of there but it's really easy to blank on that lake too.

You might check out Kansas Department of Wildlife's website also and check out the where to fish part for region 2 in KS for more ideas on where to fish. You can also find the fishing forecast that shows sampling numbers for most of the public lakes in the state.

Missouri Department of Conservation has a similar feature on their website also but I have little personal experience on the KC MO area lakes.

Not really. My boat is on that water all the time. Loading your boat with the trolling motor is as easy as the gas motor.

Just get on 69 south drive til you see smoke stacks on the left and go to Lacygne :)
