Wire Leaders

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone knows where to get higher quality light wire leaders online. The stores around here don't seem to have very good quality ones.

A few ways to go, tieable wire gets some good reviews, although I've never used it.  I rarely use wire but when I do I'll use piano wire (Malins) learn to tie a haywire twist, or nylon coated (Surlon) and crimp it.  Many different tests are available.

The black Berkley leaders with a cross-lok snap have served me well for years in pike infested waters.  If I'm specifically targeting muskie or pike I'll use some of the heaver test from a place like muskyshop.

Just Google titanium wire leaders if that's your idea of higher quality.

Titanium leaders are not good. If you bend them, they do go back to their original shape, but they are very brittle and will just break. I've been making my own leaders from single strand wire for many years but the only ones I've ever had fail on me were the titanium ones.

Sevenstrand Tackle Corp makes wire leaders, the Sevalon nylon jacket is popular. American Fishing Tackle is another wire leader mfr, Surflon is their product. Sevenstrand is made in USA, American is imported.

You can use crimp sleeves, size A3 works good for 40 lb., I this for adding stinger hooks to some swimbaits.

Go online to locate local supplier.

Check out Cortland Toothy Critter ~

It's a Tie-Able Stainless Steel Leader Material supple enough for tying but tough enough for even the most razor sharp teeth.

As a knot friendly leader routinely used by fly fisherman, it works well.

All I used was berkley and south bend flexible leaders, only modification was temoving the swivel and leaving the snap, no problems.
