I installed a new hummingbird 587 on my boat a few weeks back. I have noticed that the transducer mounted on the transom is causing a rooster tail that is splashing on the outboard. I mounted it just like the directions said to, leaving 1/4-1/2 inch space from the transom bottom to the bottom of the transducer mount. The transducer itself is pretty well flush with the hull and angled right. I've read that others have moved theirs higher and lower but have gotten the same results. Anybody have any experience with this? Any solutions?

I got a rooster tail on my Lowe too.  I haven't tried adjusting yet though. 

I just found out that the random plastic plug that came in its own bag with the humminbird is supposed to be installed to reduce rooster tail... I'll give that a shot. You may want to check and see if you have one too.

That random plastic plug when installed will solve your problem. The water is actually coming up the hole that the plug blocks.  

If your unit SI? I dont recall a plastic plug for my DI ducer

Only the XNT mounts can use that plug.

In the SI transducer line, that would be the Compact SI transom transducer XNT 9 SI 180 T that is standard for the 300, 500 and 700 series SI models.

The XNT 9 DI T is the Down Imaging transom transducer.

Thanks Dwight and Wayne. I have the XNT mount that Wayne is referring to. The above picture is the plug I was referring to. I'm excited to pop that in and see if it works. I was beginning to tell myself that this was something I was just going to have to deal with. Hard to do when you spend money on a decent unit like that.

If you have a transom mounted Humminbird DI transducer, you have the XNT mount that can use that plug.

If you can't find it call humminbird service & they will send you one. They might even send it n/c.

The part name on the package is HDWE, BGD-XNT PLUG

The part number is 540188-1

I get a roostertail from the transducer from my 597 ci HD DI unit but it's because I have it mounted a little below the hull. Had it flush but was not getting readings at higher speeds. After some research I concluded the weld in front of the transducer was messing up the water flowing over the transducer. Lowered it about 3/16" and problem solved. Roostertail doesn't bother me as it shoots out behind the boat. Frankly I do not remember any hole in the mount that a plug would fit into. The mount has a kick up feature but I have it screwed in solid.

Might need to take a closer look.
