In my bass club there is one guy who loves the Chatterbait. And here is why.

 

He was a nonboater in our Rappahannock River tournament three years ago and I we went up river to my favorite double secret spot first thing after blastoff.

 

He threw his Chatterbait and I tossed my buzzbait. He caught three over four pounds each. I never got a strike.

 

He won the tournament as a nonboater out of my boat and his three big ones caught on the Chatterbait had him end up in first place.

 

So do I throw the Chatterbait?  Yes I do.  And I suggest you consider throwing it, too.

The chatterbait application has all but replaced the spinnerbait for me. 

What does this mean?

For me, it means that I choose a chatterbait (usually 3/8 oz) over a spinnerbait in almost all instances where I used a spinnerbait in the past.  I use a buzzbait often but when the chop on the water is great enough I will sometimes use a spinnerbait.  In other cases, especially around laydowns and docks, I will use the chatterbait.

We do fish them. We just don't tell people we fish them....

Most of the waters I fish are too clear for a chatterbait. I have had some success with them when the water does turn murky, but a colorado bladed spinnerbait out performed the chatterbait. I just bought some more chatterbaits because I will continue to fish them, but for me, the colorado blade spinnerbait is the go-to in those conditions.

One of the lakes I fish a lot the bottom is visible in upwards of 20' of water, and they love a chatterbait at times. Any time there is some wind or clouds I can usually catch a ton of fish on a bright white 3/8oz chatterbait with a chartreuse trailer. I fish it very quickly, just below the surface. The largemouth and smallmouth both slam it when it's on. It's one of those techniques that either seems to either really catch them, or they won't even look at it though.
