Jighead paint chipping what to do

Featured Replies

I fish in rocks a lot and I constantly see the paint on my jigs chipping off where it made contact with the rocks.  Is this normal and what can I do to repaint my jigheads?

Yeah, it's normal. I re-paint mine with auto touch up paint and then clear coat.

Some jig heads aren't painted or baked as well as other.  The heads are made from lead.  It's not the paint itself that is chipping, it's the lead getting beat up enough to cause some flex which leads to the paint flaking off.  You can brush some clear epoxy onto the head and it will help some.  The better way would be to take the skirt off, dip it in some powder paint, bake it, and then coat it with a good strong clear coat of some kind.  Personally, I don't really worry about it.  I don't think I've ever had a fish look at a jig head and say, that thing is chipped up, I don't want to eat it.

Yeah, that's true. It's more of a mental thing for me, not the fish.

Thanks guys! I guess touchin my jigs up is another project for me to keep away those winter blues :)

All my jigs are beaten up, never touch them up, the fish don't seem to care one way or the other.  I only use bucktails and my best producing jig has almost no feathers left on it, not to mention no paint on the head.

I pour my own and many times I don't paint the ones I make for myself, or I use ones that don't turn out great.  The fish don't care.  But if you do, get some nail polish inwhatever colors you need and carry with you.

I was going to suggest the same thing. I pour my own and powder paint, but after the jig is assembled and I want to touch up, I use a colored nail polish & then a clear coat nail polish if the jig looks THAT bad.

Good suggestion another sitepa.  :)

Sharpen the hooks... don't worry about the paint!

That has always been my approach. 8-) As has been mentioned, the most beat up baits sometimes seem to work best. I have thought about touching up jigs and cranks, but never seem to get around to it.

I pour my jigheads, I don 't even bother to paint them, as long as the hook is razor sharp I 'm fine with them.

I've never had a problem with beat up lures catching fish either.  I have a rattle trap that basically has no paint left on it and the bass love it but I just dont see the sense of touching lead if I dont have to.
