Which Color Bird Lure?

Featured Replies

I'm new to bassresource so I'd like to start off by saying hello to everyone who shares my pain of having to watch all those guys out in Cali surpass our states' record sizes seasonally, with the exception of Georgia of course (we appreciate that George (and Paul Duclos for letting that ~24 pounder go in Spring Lake)). And since it's my first post I'd like to give a "brief" background on myself since it's always nice to know a little something about the peopole you share a passion with.

I've been saltwater fishing since I could stand up in a boat but I've only been into bass fishing since last May, which is probably a good thing since I probably wouldn't be doing so well academically if I'd gotten into it sooner. I'm an undergraduate double-majoring in physics and math, and I'm getting ready to head to graduate school to get a PhD in physics but I'm thinking pro bass fisherman now ;):Idea3:. . . it's safe to say that I'm obsessed (rather than using the "hooked" cliche). It's a mental game that is centered around one fish and I can't get enough of it, but I don't have to tell you guys because you are the ones sitting on a bass fishing forum right now ignoring other responsibilities.

Anyways my goal in my first summer of bass fishing was to catch a 5# bass (I've never been one to set realistic goals) and I did! ....Welllll it was 4.8 but we round up in these parts ;) and I ended up catching 4 that were 4-5 lbs and they were all on a Strike King KVD frog! So naturally the Flip in the Bird lure caught my eye. I'm going to order one but I'd like to match the hatch so finally here is my question:

What kind/color of small birds (we're obviously not talking hawks) are native to the east coast? I'm in Virginia if you couldn't tell by my name.

Thanks for reading my post and I hope that I didn't just waste 5 minutes of your life!

Welcome to the site!

When I lived in Winchester redwing black birds were always close to the reeds around the ponds

Welcome to the forums!  I would suggest the "Grey finch" or the "White Chested Tree Swallow".  Those two will give you a grey belly and white belly.  If the water around you is very stained, another good choice would be the "Yellow Chested Chat"

First, Welcome to BR! I wouldn't get overly hung up on the color of top water lures especially frog type baits. Bass are looking up and more times than not, they are just seeing a silhouette above them. I like to look at the belly of the baits so white/yellow in the day hours and brown/black in the evening or low light hours is what I go with. If it resembles something they eat, they'll eat it.  Your best bet is to get something natural looking to start with.I have the grey/black bird lure.  It's a decent lure but I would have on a quality frog before the flip n the bird lure. The bird is not as soft as I'd like it to be and I like my hooks spaced a little further apart. Totally my preferences..

Here are my favorite topwater frog/mice:

Koppers LiveTarget Frog

Koppers Live Target Field Mouse

River 2 Sea Spittin Wa

KVD Sexy Frog

3.777 001

Catches me lots of 3 to 4 pounds bass, my biggest on this particular lure is a 4lbs 1oz LM

Welcome to the forum!

Im thinking you should have the black/ white barn swallows there like we do. They nest under bridges and sometimes the babies fall out of the nest into the water.

Greetings and Welcome to the forums :) I would check out the ,"Fishing Tackle Forum ". White works for me !

Welcome to the site.  :hi:

Wonderful having you with us.

Great to read that you are heading to grad school. UVA, Tech or somewhere outside of Virginia?

No idea about the bird bait as I have never thrown one.

Looking forward to your posts.
