Question For You Bc Owner's!

Featured Replies

I recently just purchased a second bait caster because I am interested in trying a new brand. Currently I have a Curado 201E7 paired to a Crucial M/F 7'2" and use it primarily for throwing jigs, cranks, and spinners. I just couldn't pass up the killer deal I got on gen3 Revo Premier so I have one of those on the way!

So my question is this...will the premier be better at throwing lighter tackle? Thinking of soft plastics and lighter jigs. I was planning on picking up another Crucial in MH/F as well and I can swap the reels around if needed. Any opinions out there?

Thanks,

Mk

The reel plays a part in throwing light baits, but more importantly, the rod must be light enough to load up with the light lures. If the rod is too powerful, it won't cast light stuff.

Spot on.  You should be more concerned with the rod before reel. Your M/F will be better suited for 1/4 oz to 1/2 oz, where the MH/F will be better in the 3/8-1oz selection.

Specify on how light of lures you plan to throw. Another Medium or ML might be necessary.

I'd play musical reels, but theres several feet of ice on the water so I need something to entertain myself. :laugh5:

In seriousness, whats been said is spot on.  I'd use the MH for your jigging and the M for plastics.  Use whichever is rated for the appropriate weight when using your other lures.

Plastics I usually throw with 1/8 oz weights or bigger. When I go weightless or lighter I use my Stradic/St. Croix combo. I was asking about the reel based on the newer tech of the braking systems. I am assuming that the Revo might handle the lighter baits better which would leave the Curado to throw the heavier stuff. Time this spring will tell!

Thanks everyone who offered up responses.

The rod matters a lot more than the reel as said before. I dont have any ml bait casting rods but I have toyed around with getting one. Im going to buy a new jerkbait rod before that happens though.

I have a ML baitcaster on the slate to be built sometime this year (been trying to build it for 3 or 4 years actually!). Want it for throwing unweighted soft plastics and small cranks.

That will be on my list as well! I just enjoy my BC more than my spinning setup. Would love to have a light rig!

Scott hit the nail on the head in as far as the importance of the rod. Once that's addressed finesse bait-casters use small, light weight, shallow spools. The light weight starts up easier on the cast. The braking system is almost irrelevant since you'll likely use minimal spool tension and zero brakes.
