Tips For Tying Hair Jigs

Featured Replies

I'm going to start tying hair jigs tonight. In about 30 minutes, actually. I'm excited. I've watched a bunch of videos and I think I've got it nailed down. But I still wanted to ask the community if they had any tips or tricks. If you do, please feel free to post them and/or pictures of your favorite patterns. Thanks!

When you start wrapping the hair, don't make the first wrap tight. Just enough so it wont move.

I used to sell them and have tied many thousands.  If you have specific questions I'll do my best to answer them.  It would help to know a bit about you equipment as what you have will make a difference in what and how you do.

The best advise I could give is to take your time and learn to work with 1 material first and add others as you get better. I would also add to get the best equipment you can afford, I tied for years on a standard AA vise and I thought it was fine and when it broke I got a Griffin rotary vise and now tying is easier, I can tie faster and the jigs are better than ever, a quality bobbin also helps.

The only thing I could add to all the good advice is that I like to use kevlar for tying. I just hate the accidental breaks in the middle of things. Have tied for years and agree with above advice. Have fun.

I use gel-spun. It's awesome.
