Rapala Sureset Belly Hook (Clackin Rap)

Recommended Posts

Just bought a Rapala Clackin Rap which has a SureSet belly hook.  That big, wide gap seems to be more trouble than good and I'm not eager to lose it quickly (or ever for that matter).  Thinkin' of replacing it with a "standard" treble.  What experiences do you all have with these hooks?

Clackin' Raps, you mean?  I bought the

Bought it (the lure) in the largest size available mostly for Lake of the Woods, Canada where the smallmouth seem to prefer a large meal.  But I'm good with Pike if they aren't slimey little snot rockets.

Yep, Clackin Raps. I've got 2 and have only caught pike on them. One is "Hot Steel" color and the other is "Moss Back Shiner" color. I don't know if the large hook really makes a difference on hookups.

Pike and Musky do love them, but so do the bass up north.  I tend to use them more in the early season when the weeds haven't reached full growth.  That SureSet belly hook doesn't seem to get hung up any more than the standard hook.  I can't say one way or another about more or better hook-ups as the big girls tend to inhale even the 7/8oz. baits.

I haven't had any problems with the sure-sets snagging up, but they sure do tangle bad in the tackle box and foul worse when fishing with them.

I never understood the sure set hooks until I used them and I don't really have any problems with them but I can tell you that when you get those barely hooked fish that are hanging on by 1 single hook on the treble, well you feel a lot more confident when that is the sure set. In fact every time I get one like that it is hooked on the sure set hook and I don't think it is the cause as it only seems to happen in cold water but no unusual snagging or anything, I like them.

The hooks themselves are nice, but they will most likely break after a while, I then replace them with short shank triple grips. I have about 40 of these baits, In my opinion probably the most under rated bait on the market. I think it has to do with the price tag, but these also take some time to figure out how to use them, they are not like any other square bill out there.

They are a magnet for angel hair algae down here. I switched them out to Gammy ewg trebles pretty quick.
