What crankbaits/jerkbaits need hook changes?

Recommended Posts

I have heard a lot about people who change the hooks on their crankbaits and jerkbaits. The question now becomes, what brand crankbaits and jerkbaits need a hook change?

None of the brands I buy require any modification.

Pretty much all of them IMHO. Here is what I do.

Straight out of the box with crap hooks that need to be  changed: Any Strike King, Storm Wiggle Warts, original Rat-L-Traps, and any Mann's cranks

Change to what I want before I fish them: Sure set Rapala's, Bandits, Bombers, and Normans

Change when stock hooks are shot: Spro, Excaliber, most other Rapala's.

What few LC's I own have good stock hooks, so I guess they can be added to the above cat.

As for hooks I like, the Mustad KVD's are my favorite right now, and I also like the short shank Gamakatsu ME hooks. The Mustad short shank elite hooks are also in my rotation.

I have also been using the Owners but now am trying the Mustad KVD trebles.

Need to try these; have only heard GREAT things in regards to this hook

I switch a lot of mine over to the Excalibur rotating trebles and don't have any trouble getting hookups 8-)

No real way to say which brands exactly. It is a matter of preference and what you want out of your hooks. How important is top quality to you? Most any of the quality brands out there now come with very adequate hooks on them already. Your really going to want a hook that will dig in and hold on your thumbnail and that wont bend easily. Corrosion resistance can be a factor as well since some of the bronzed hooks and lesser quality ones will rust right away.

The brands mentioned are excellent hooks! I would also add vmc trebles to the list.

Also do your self a huge favor and ditch any vmc sureset hooks that come on any rapalas if you have them. You'll find out why soon enough after you throw enough dollars down the toilet losing baits and mortally wounding fish. ::)

I replace almost all stock hooks on hardbaits like Lucky craft, Vision Ito Megabass, sebile magic swimmer and others with owner ST41.  I've lost enough good size fish on straighten, broken and bent hooks.    The only time I dont replace the stock hooks is when I'm fishing for smaller fish like trouts and bonita.
